I'm in the midst of reading Red Square, the third novel in this series by Martin Cruz Smith.

I love his writing, subtle humor, plot twists, and our down-trodden hero Arkady Renko!

Anyone else read the series? I understand there is a movie of the first book, Gorky Park. Anyone seen the movie? Is it worth hunting down?

I've read a couple of the Arkady Renko books, albeit, a very long time ago! The movie "Gorky Park" stars William Hurt as Renko, if I'm remembering correctly. Again, it has been a while since I've seen it. I think I remember liking the movie but mostly because I'm a big fan of William Hurt.

The movie was okay and starred Lee Marvin.  Nothing exceptional.  I liked the second book about life on the trawler.  I think he also wrote a book where the setting was japan about the time WWII started...anyway I had a hard time getting through that one.

Lee Marvin? Really? We must be talking about different movies. This http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085615/ is the one I was talking about.

Nope. Same movie! Funny that I remembered William Hurt but not Lee Marvin!

Thanks for the info about the movie.

I read his book set in Japan (not an Arkady Renko book) and felt the same way, okay but nothing great. I believe it was called December 6.

I think one of the things that draws me to the Arkady Renko series is all of the information about Russian culture. I have a great interest in other cultures and Smith's descriptions of this time period are captivating.
