Here's a puzzler...  I recently sent a book to a member in Florida.  It was an older book, in very good condition, so I over packaged it a bit (double wrapped in bubblewrap, inside a box with plastic peanuts) and kept an eye on the DC info to see how it was doing.  On the 23rd it got scanned as "Arrival At Unit" and the members home PO, and nothing after that.  Only 4 days, sure, but I rather expected to see it scanned as delivered by now, and the member hasn't marked it received yet either.  I'm debating with myself as whether to PM the member and suggest they check with their PO or not.

Opinions?

I don't think it would be impolite to PM the person and ask.  But, if it hasn't been scanned as delivered, then chances are they haven't been to the PO to get their mail for the past four days.  They could be out of town for some reason, or sick and can't get to the PO. If they are gone and have their mail on hold, then it may be being held in a tub at the PO until they get back.

I have people in my office who only come in once a week or so, and one person even calls and wants me to tell her what she has in her box so she can decide if it's worth the 10 mile trip or not!  These are the joys of working in a small rural PO, but even with the few parcels we handle each day, I have been known to forget a scan once in a great while.  I can't imagine having a 100% scan rate in a large office, but that is always the goal.

It' spossible that this person doesn't have computer access everyday.  Maybe the book was waiting for them at home on Fri and it'll be marked received on Mon when they have a work computer to use-or maybe they can't get to the library on the weekend.  If it went to a PO box-some people don't check on the weekend. Both my parents and my inlaws have PO boxes-my mom doesn't go on the weekend unless she happens to be near the PO on Sat morning.  My MIL has only a tiny PO that's closed on Saturdays.  Some people also have books go to their work and so if they only work Mon-Fri they might not get a book that comes in on Sat.  Or maybe they take it home to open and make sure it's OK first.

If the book isn't in danger of going lost then I'd give them a few more days.  I find it very annoying when I have PMs asking me if I've received a book before it's close to going lost.  If I haven't marked it received then I haven 't gotten it yet.

Mary, it went to a home address, and my puzzlement is that, from the DC info, it's still sitting in the PO and hasn't been sent out for delivery.  I wouldn't even say I'm particularly concerned about this, just that it's making me very curious why a package would still be sitting in the PO five days after it arrived there, and not be sent out for delivery to the address.

Aha!  It's not sitting in the PO...  I ran the # on the usps.com site and it shows there as being delivered the same day it arrived at the PO.  For some reason that info isn't getting to the PBS system.

Well there is a lag time between when the PO gets the infor and transfers it to PBS.  I know I've seen people complain on here that they've had their DC books scanned at the PO and a day or two later still don't have their credits because PBS hasn't received the info yet.  So who knows.  There's a book from Jan that went lost to me that the DC shows as being delivered to me and I haven't seen the book yet.  It was a WL book that was just offered to me again. So you just never know.  They may have scanned as delivered at the PO because their carriers don't have scanners and then it took a day or two to actually make it into the mail carriers truck.

Or the person could be on vacation but has computer access so they didn't go on hold-but since they can't open their mail and inspect the book-they haven't marked it received yet.  I had that happen with a lady I sent a book to one time.  She PM"d me to say she was in India, had daily computer access but her mail was being held and she wanted me to know that she'd be back before the book went lost.

The package did end up being delivered on the 23rd.  I just heard from the requestor who apologized for the delay in marking it received.  I simply sent a PM saying that I noticed it was delivered and wanted to make sure it arrived in good condition.

I have one scanned as 2/28/2009 12:22 PM ET - Delivered - PLEASANTVILLE, IA, but a few days set before the "system action" date, I PMed the member, and a few days later heard back that they haven't received it yet.  Weird...
