I began reading Kathleen Woodiwiss in 1977. This book, "Ashes in the Wind" is my #1 all-time favorite book and I have rea 1,000s. The historicals references in this book were descriptive and informative, but the love between Cole and Alaina is touching, especially as you read about the struggles they go through to come together. A classic story that will last for all time.

Ashes in the Wind is one of the earliest Civil War romances, and as a thirty year old novel it does not have the same snappy dialog and page-turning plots that newer titles have. However, the characters are survivors who fight for their dreams and love in spite of past pain. For the age of the novel, the plot is intricate and complex.

Kathleen Woodiwiss has been a favorite of mine for 20+ years and she always pulls me into her characters' lives with the first page. Ashes in the Wind is no different. A true love story.

Alaina MacGaren is forced to dress as a boy. Yankee surgeon Cole Latimer feels he should help the "lad" in need-- never suspecting the rags conceal a bewitching belle suspected of being a rebel spy.

Very well written Civil War era book.

One of my top two favorites by Woodiwiss. It has all of the grand sweeping splendor of an old skool romance, minus the gratuitous bodice ripping. Alaina is an infinitely strong and determined heroine - one of my all time favorites - and Cole, for all of his idiotic mistakes, still manages to finish the book deserving her; though it got close enough to make me wonder once or twice:P A great, highly recommended old skool historical romance.

One of Kathleen Woodiwiss's best books, right behind Wolf and the Dove and Flame and the Flower.
Her later books were not that good, but this one is great!

Kathleen Woodiwiss is one of my favorite authors of historical romance. You can feel the pain the war has caused and rejoice in the love and happiness at the end of the story.

Kathleen Woodiwiss is one of the most highly acclaimed historical romance writers and THIS book is one of her best. I have kept this one in order to re-read it once a year or so.

Can you say snooze fest. I labored through this book. Man I had to skip through a lot of crap to get to plot points. Although the heroine Alaina was funny and I liked her spirit, this book was still awful.

One of my all time favorite. Characterization is such that you will talk about Cole and Alaina as if they are your best friends. One of the best; rivals Gone With the Wind. - I know that's almost heresy, but it's true.
