Atomic Energy for Military Purposes Author:Henry DeWolf Smyth This is the full text of the official report on development of the atomic bomb my the U.S. Government, with the addition of photographs and a later government release on the New Mexico test of July 16. It is the basis, in other words, for the greatest scientific news story of all time. — The historic document was written by H. D. Smyth, chairman ... more »of the Princeton physics department, at the direction of Maj. Gen. L. R. Groves, in charge of the Atomic Bomb Project, as a "report to the nation." It was written with a non-expert audience in mind in order that the report might not only convey the epoch-making scientific information, but also present the momentous issues of public policy which have confronted the world since Hiroshima. Laymen with even elementary scientific knowledge will understand the report in general, scientists in any field will find it very easy reading.
Starting with a brief survey of advances in nuclear physics between 1896 and 1940, Dr. Smyth then tells the almost incredible story of scientific and engineering teamwork culminating in the manufacture of atomic bombs.
The report was first issued by the Army in a small typewritten edition reproduced in lithoprint. Princeton University Press discovered that this was in no way filling the demand and undertook this edition as a public service. At Dr. Smyth's direction, no royalties are being paid to the author.« less
