Either way, its not surprising, I am sure people would buy the Touch over the others, don't you Nookers think? Its a much nicer looking device (to me).

Our Walmart must have not gotten the memo. The Wi-Fi/3G version is still full price. No sign of the Wi-Fi only version.

Yes, they announced this a while back.  The Nook Classic will be sold only as long as their are supplies.

Shoot!  If only my birthday hadn't been in January.  I could have gotten the new one.  Or, I could have gotten the Nook Classic for alot cheaper and some ebooks to go with it for my bday.  It always seems I get things just as they are being discontinued but just before the price drops.

Well if you're happy with the Nook Classic, that's all that matters.

There are supposed to be new Kindle model(s) coming out this year, but I have no intention of getting one. I am quite happy with my 3G Kindle.

B&N only works on Nooks!  Just as Amazon only works with Kindles!

The ONLY way to get BOTH is to Go Tablet!

No tablet for me....that's what netbooks are for. I think its silly.....I've seen the ads in the paper....you buy your ipad, then you buy a case with a keyboard to attach....why would anyone do that? They make really little netbooks that can probably do everything the ipad does.

Netbooks are hard to read on!  Keyboard gets in the way!  Now if they just make them so the keyboad could Detach or turn & lay flat  that Might work!   Buying Keyboards for Tablets are Optional.  Tablets Do have popup keyboards just like Nooks Classic!

But I don't think most people buy tablets to read books on. They buy them for internet use. To me a real keyboard is much more useful than a virtual keyboard. (Though I noticed in Nate's blog today, he says netbooks are dead. No doubt because of the tablet craze. www.the-digital-reader.com)  My opinion, the netbook is much better than the tablet. I think the tablet craze will die away eventually.

I really doubt it. There are more tablets coming out in the future, and even Amazon is supposed to have a tablet of their own coming out soon. Lots of people wanting on this bandwagon.

And as more and more apps become available outside the restrictive Apple market, I think the bigger it will get.

Nook First Generation or Nook Classic being discontinued would be accurate.

When Kindle or Sony came out with a new model and stopped producing the previous one would it be accurate to say:

Kindle Being Discontinued

or

Sony Being Discontinued

??

I don't see the appeal in the tablets. Not for the prices for the really good ones. Yes rumors say Amazon has one or two tablets in the works. I'm a Kindle girl but don't want their tablet. I want to read on an ereader, I spend way too much time on the computer as it is.

The title might be more accurate if it said Nook Classic is being discontinued. Or 1st generation Nook discontinued. Which really isn't news. Perhaps to be even more accurate, it could say, Huge discounts on Nook Classic!

Speaking of discounts, Amazon warehouse deals had the 3rd generation Kindle wifi (refurb) for $99. I don't know if they have any left. Pretty good deal!

I know there are cheaper tablets....still don't want one. I have the skills to be able to buy books anywhere and read them on my Kindle, or my Jetbook. Even library books can go on a Kindle if you know how to do it.

Yes rumors say Amazon has one or two tablets in the works.

Apparently, the order to build is in, starting this month. Here.

As for the appeal, it all depends on what you want it for. I know plenty of people who bought them as ereaders. Not all ended up using them that way, though. I have 3 e-ink readers, my iphone and an iPad. I find them all useful, just not overlapping much. I like to check my emails on mine, download free books, read the forums, read news, check facebook.... I just don't like it to read on for long periods of time. I also have a laptop I don't even open up anymore and should probably sell before it gets too dated. I'd take the iPad with me on a trip in place of a laptop any day.

As for netbooks, couldn't get into the fact that everything was based on getting to alternate sites because they lacked storage on the machine. I'm afraid I'm not a 'cloud' girl. Seen too many web sites bite the dust to trust my stuff to be there when I want it. Rather have it on the machine in hand.

But it all comes down to personal preference, which means it's nice for people to have choices. I think the tablets will become more 'the thing' of the future rather than die off. Too useful for too many people, however they use them.

As for the thread title, eventually, all electronic devices will be discontinued. Some aren't on the market very long at all, so one being discontinued is not only no surprise, but is expected as soon as it's out. But not all are discounted, even as they age and disappear. I don't think it being discontinued is newsworthy, but discounted certainly is for those in the market.

I get Inkmesh thru my Facebook account!  Having a Tablet means I can get ALL the freebies I want!  Not just thru Amazon LOL  Sony just listed 50!!!!  Freebies over the past 3 days!  Kindle 5 :(  & B&N 10 :(   Next week it will be switched BUT not always the same books.  So to me a Tablet Makes sence than having several ereaders.
