Sad news to report.  Kage Baker, author of The Company novels has cancer and her situation is "as bad as can be".

I totally agree with this person:

I remain permanently uncomfortable with the fact that writers I like are also mortals who can get sick, or die. I just don't think that's fair, or should be allowed to happen, damn it.  Posted by Peter Damien on Sunday January 17, 2010 at 1:57 PM

Very sad! Her friends are asking that all her fans email or write to show our support. . . I will definitely be sending my best wishes!

I just discovered her a few months back, and I was so excited to find an author with a large back catalog that I could go through and the prospect of many more years of writing for me to enjoy. . . when this news hits! I think all I can say is: LAME!!!

It is amazing how I can feel so keenly the tragedy of someone I have never met, spoken to, or corresponded with.  I have to wonder if maybe writers like Baker really do invest a piece of themselves, a piece of their soul, in their books.  I would like to think so.  Then, if the worst should happen, something of her, some essence of who she was, will never fade from the world.
