I found the beginning of this book to be painfully slow. However, about the middle of the book, the story takes off and is worth the wait.

Elyssa Sutton and Hunter Maxwell - part of the "Only" series, post Civil war.

If you loved the "Only" series from Elizabeth Lowell, you'll love this continuation of the series. The characters are vibrant with well-established personalities and attitudes. The spark between the hero and heroine is fierce. I really liked the way Lowell sets up Hunter to push and push and push until he finally is the one to fall, helplessly and hopelessly to Elyssa.
If you're a series lover, this book is a must because you can read it, love it, and go back to the original books without a problem. Read Autumn Lover, today!

As a girl from Northern Nevada, this book was especially interesting to me. Great story. You can never go wrong with Lowell historicals.

From back cover:
A woman in need, a man in pain, in fury and fire they must now stand as one-to fight for something cherished, something lost...and for a passion neither dreamed could live.

One of the best story-tellers around, and her regencies and historicals are her best genres. This is entertaining.

Winter fire is better but read this one before winter fire

Set directly after the Civil War, Elyssa goes back to her family ranch in Nevada to pick up the pieces. Enters Hunter Maxwell...scorned by an ex-lover and on the hunt for outlaws who did him wrong. They pick up the fight together and the flames burn bright.
It was the first Elizabeth Lowell book I ever read and it was awesome. I could not wait to get the next book in the Maxwell Series "Winter Fire." I loved the story line and the characters.
Returning to her Nevada ranch at the Civil War's end, Elyssa Sutton finds it picked bare by scavengers and coveted by determined men. Yet the proud young woman vows never again to abandon her Ruby Mountain home-though it means enlisting the aid of a dark and dangerous stranger who lives for revenge alone.

I really enjoyed this book.
Wonderful part of a duet from Lowell, she's great as always.
Beautiful, determined Elyssa Sutton has returned to her isolated ranch in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada after the Civil War -- but the Culpepper gang wants the horses, the ranch, and Elyssa, and they'll kill anyone who gets in their way. Can Hunter Maxwell, the handsome, bitter ranch foreman she hires when he appears mysteriously out of the moonlight, protect her?
Returning to her NEvada ranch at the Civil War's end, Elyssa Sutton finds it picked bare by scavengers and coveted by determined men. Yet the proud young woman vows never again to abandon her Ruby Mountain home - though it means enlisting the aid of a dark and dangerous stranger who lives for revenge alone. Hunter Maxwell has suffered from the savagery of outlaws and the faithlessness of a woman. And he will trust no female - nor will he rest until the raiders who destroyed his family pay for their crimes.
Bookcrossing sticker on the front cover. My daughter read this book but didn't really care for it. She said the male character was too sexist and she can't believe the female character fell for him.
This is another excellent book by one of my favorite authors, Elizabeth Lowell. Her \"Only\" series, four novels, is wonderful; \"Autumn Lover\" and its sequel \"Winter Fire\" are a continuation of that series. Must reads, all!
