A while ago there was a thread about average heroes, or something similar. I'm reading about one right now. It's a mystery by Rosemary Harris, PUSHING UP DAISIES. The heroine is a 30-something into gardening/landscaping and the hero is a cop, average height (5'8"/5'9") and she describes him as cute but tubby.
From the description I'd think of him as more out of shape than tubby (he knows his way around a donut). He/she have a slightly rub-the-wrong-way getting-to-know-you period but you know what happens. The book is set in Connecticut along the shore. Very good. First of 3 books so far.
