Hi I'm new here and wondering how can I get started with the BIR List?  Is it just for books that you've posted here or can you add books that you are keeping or can't post?  I'm always finding myself settling down with a "new to me book" only to get a chapter into and realize that I had already read it!  It would be great to be able to access a list of recent reads from my phone the next time I go book shopping!!

Another question...do you have to use the PBS wrappers?  My little girl is always running my printer out of ink and I sell on E-bay sometimes and find going to the post office easier (and postage less expensive) as I pass right by it at least 4 times a week driving carpool.  I always have brown craft paper and markers but not always $40 to spend on ink.

Finally, if someone is offering a deal and you want to take them up on it, how do you go about that?

Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi Shelley!  Welcome to PBS!

You can put any book on your BIR list.  Just search for the book, then click on the title to bring up the details page for that book.  You have to rate the book by clicking on one of the stars.  Then over on the right, hover over the More Options button  to get the pull down menu and Books I've Read is one of the options there.

You do not have to use the PBS wrapper.  You can use the PBS label without postage on any package.  If your printer is out of ink, you do have to click "Print Wrapper" and go through the motions until the PDF file pops up so you can get the address you need to mail to.

For deals, there are several ways to do it.  You want to be sure that at least one book in the deal goes through the PBS system so that if there is a problem, there is a way to track it.  If it a multiple books for one credit, you order one book of the person's shelf then PM the title of the freebies you want.  If it multiple books for multiple credits (like 3 for 2 or 5 for 3), you can order a book for each credit off their shelf, then PM them the freebie titles, or just order one book off their shelf and buddy them the rest of the credits.  Some people do something more complicated like order all the books off their shelf then they will buddy back the extra credits to you.  That was keeps all of the books involved in the PBS system, but most deals are done the easier way.

Happy reading!

Welcome to PBS! :)

1) You can add BIR without having gotten them here. Type in the ISBN of the book, click on book details and you will find a button that says "more options." Click on that and hit the +Books I've Read to add it. You then can rate it and put your review there too if you want to--that part is optional, but I think you do have to give it a star rating to add it.

2) You don't have to use the PBS wrappers. Just bring up the wrapper screen and copy the information carefully. Be sure to include the Request ID number on the return address or inside the package in case of a problem, and make sure your writing is as legible as possible and that you've copied it accurately.

3) I don't do deals, so while I can guess at the logistics, I'm going to let someone who does it all the time and can be sure to give an accurate answer help you there.

What I'll do for the BIR to add books I read before PBS, library books etc.., I'll usually search the author's name, select All Books and then go down the line and give a star rating to any of their books that I've read.  Some books have been issued in 20 different versions and this way I get them all. So if I'm perusing someone's shelf no matter what version comes up, I know I've alreayd read the book.  When you do it by ISBN it only marks that one.

I would not recommend buddying credits for deals.  Then there's no way to get the credits back if you don't get the books.  Order enough books from them to cover the # of credits in the deal you made.  If they offered 5 for 2 then order 2 of the books.  So if they never show up, you get those 2 credits back when they go lost. And if they show up in bad condition you can mark them RWP.  You may not get your credtis back but then PBS will have it on record that they sent bad books.  It'll help get them off PBS if they've done it before.

Welcome to PBS, Shelley. :)

BIR stands for "Books I've Read" so basically, it's for books read. :) To get books in that list, all you have to do is rate them by clicking the stars...once you do that, they go there automatically (no need to click on the BIR button.)
