I'm getting really frustrated with BOB swaps lately. The last one I received had books in it that were a mess. Two were water damaged and covers torn up and falling apart, the other three books that came in the box weren't much better but without the water damage.

I also had a BOB swap months ago where I never recieved the BOB. I had emailed PBS about it and they said they'd take care of it but the persons account is no longer valid and nothing was done about it. I had sent the other person 5 or 6 books. Arrggh!

I'm one of those people that people on here complain about because I have specific requestor conditions such as no water damaged books, no books smelling of smoke (I have severe asthma and allergies) so I'm very specific. Most member are really nice and will PM me if their books don't fit the bill or if they have questions so I appreciate that, but what can you do besides give someone a negative rating when they send you books that aren't even swapable? I hate to give negative ratings, but the books I've received via BOB swaps for the most part are a mess.

The books I recieve via normal swaps are usually fine. I think people try to get away with swapping books in poor condition. I don't think that's right.

I've had great BOB swaps.   Sorry to hear that you've had a run of bad luck.

Ivy, I totally agree with you. My last 4 BoB swaps (and 1 normal swap) have been a disaster. When I approached the swappers, they have stated someone else even checked the books before they were mailed or state "they were perfectly fine before I mailed."  Well I suppose the post office could have damaged the spines to the point they have actually separated but sure seems odd to have my last 4 swaps delivered with severe spine damage. I also have a link in both my conditions and profile displaying photos of broken/damaged spines so it always amazes when I still receive damaged books. Thinking very seriously about not renewing my BoB subscription and just leaving PBS since the majority of the books are ending up in the recycle bin. And no, I don't feel its right but it’s either adapt and overcome or leave. I just feel it's sad they don't realize the success of PBS is dependent upon all of us.

I stopped doing BoB swaps ages ago because almost every box I received was full of dirty, nasty, falling apart books.

Kristin, I agree with you. I don't think I'm going to renew my BOB for that reason also.

Trish - that's too bad. I think PBS really needs to take some action about BOBs...although it's very difficult to regulate I guess. I just wish somehow people would have enough integrity not to send books that are a mess.

BTW, has anyone else noticed the same problem on book deals, say 3 for 1? I used to get all excited about those deals but then I've received the books and they're a mess.

I expect to get used books here, not books that look like someone picked them out of the trash bin, torn, stained and water damaged with broken spines. *Sheesh* I would NEVER send someone something like that.

I always wondered that when I would open a BoB and see all these crappy books in there!  If they were on the shelf then they should've met the guidelines.  It was so frustrating!!!

I have thought about joining the bob but now reading this I am starting to rethink. Whenever I even post books to my bookshelf I always make sure they are in good condition, better than PBS conditions even. And if I even think a book isnt in good condition I dont post it. I will either offer free as an unpostable or just donate it. It is a shame that others dont do the same thing.

I've received many great books through BOB.  As I'd be getting the same book if I requested it for a credit, I don't view BOB as any more risky than a credit transaction, and the savings on postage has been substantial.

I totally agree with you DuskyRose. Why would they have it on their bookshelves in the first place if it's not in PBS swapable condition?

I tend to swap more BOBs now with people who are established BOB swappers as opposed to newbies, which is sad. I remember when I was a newbie BOB swapper how excited I was when someone requested a BOB swap with me. I actually still get excited over a BOB, lol. Hey! Someone request a BOB from me! lol
