Shelley and I had a discussion in the first posting of the April BOM regarding the future of BOM's, and since I'm not sure if anyone but us is participating in April, I thought I'd start a general thread to get other's thoughts.  Shelley and I were saying how we both really love the BOM's, but participation seems to have been waning especially now with all of the challenges.  Personally, I've always enjoyed that it introduced me to a book that I probably would not have read on my own.  However, if there's not enough interest, it may not be worth continuing.  Or, maybe we should take a break for the summer and pick up again in September.  Thoughts?

Michelle - You know my thoughts, as we've discussed them, and they're the same as yours!  LOL!  I too love the BOMs and hope they don't die out entirely.  If people are too busy right now, I can see where maybe a break over the spring/summer might be a good idea and then we can pick it up again in the fall.  Personally I think I read more in the summer than I do in the winter, but I know for many people summer is a busy time when perhaps they are spending more time outside and less time curled up with a cup of tea and a book.  LOL!  Also, like you say, with the regular HF challenges and then the mini challenges, we HF-ers here have a lot of reading to do.  I'll be interested to see what other people think.

I have not participated in a BOM yet ... but I want to!! Until the historical fiction challenge (thank-you, Valli), I didn't participate much on the forum at all ... and now that I've "met" all of you, I want to participate more, including in BOM discussions.

My problem the past couple of months has been that the book chosen was not to my interests ... which will happen to everyone from time to time.

So, although as a non-player my voice is small, my suggestion is that we keep it going. Perhaps instead of a random drawing for the book chosen (isn't that how it's usually done?), we vote on the title we want.  ???

...not sure i really deserve a vote here since I've been so absent from the boards lately.....BUT since i happen to have an opinion (shocker, i know), i'll share it:

i really enjoyed the BOMs, i loved leading the discussion the month i was general and i actually liked being faced with a book that others wanted that was not something i'd pick up on my own--i thought it was a great tool for that broadening effect.  but, i haven't seen genie or jennifer w on lately either, so it feels like some of us have had some time challenges, and that maybe for this year the HF challenge will replace BoMs....i also preferred the format of the BoMs to the more independent study feel of the HF challenge--we were all on the same book, sharing observations and thoughts together-it felt more social than the HF challenge does.

so, maybe for next year or for whenever most of us are finished the HF challenge, we could blend the two? do an HF challenge for the year where we submit and vote on topics (such as Valli proposed this year in her questions), and then also vote on the books to satisfy them so we are all reading together?

I have enjoyed the BOMs and have participated in all but two of them, I think.  In many cases the choices were something I would probably never have read on my own.  While the books themselves haven't always been stellar writing, the discussions have been lively, especially the February ones and I have enjoyed that tremendously.  Sharing my love of this genre with like minded people and meeting everyone in the H/F threads has been so wonderful; I  wish I had discovered PBS years ago.  As far as the continuation of the BOM selections, we seem to be pretty independent minded folks and will participate or not as the spirit and availabity of time to read moves us.  This month I am not participating not due to lack of time to read, but  more of a desire to read some books I already own that have been "calling my name".

I'm glad you brought this up because I have been thinking about it too lately. I know it's silly, but I actually feel really guilty about not giving the BOM my full attention because I'm the one who started it, but I have found that it really isn't working with the way that I read. I haven't had as much free time lately either.

I am a "Reading Binger". <-- That's a new term that I made up, lol. I get hooked on a topic and that is all I read until something new comes along that snags my attention and sends me into a new direction. When I'm sunk deeply into a particular place or time, I have trouble with forcing myself to read something else, even if it's another really good book that I would enjoy if I was interested in reading it just then.

If we do continue the BOM, I  think it would be helpful to do two things a bit differently. #1 - Stop doing the topics and let everyone suggest books that they want to read, no matter the topic. #2 - Do the voting as someone else suggested. This way the majority of us will end up reading a book we want to read. Maybe try for every other month instead of monthly?

I personally think that anyone who is enjoying reading books together should continue doing it. Michelle and Shelley, you could see which books you own in common and read something from your TBR together. Just make one post for it and discuss the book there. You may even drag in some new readers to talk about the book with you. I think that two others did that here recently and it worked well for them.

Forums are really fluid things with people joining and leaving all of the time so things that worked well one month might not work perfectly a few months down the road. So, it's really good that you brought this up and instead of allowing the BOM to just fade away due to lack of interest, maybe we can discuss it and find a new way of doing it. Thanks for starting this post!

I like BOM but most of the time I never have a chance to start it right at the beginning of the month.  I'm usually starting it the 3rd or 4th wk of the month so I'm glad its divided by which section we're on.

I am doing this month but not til probably the 3rd week of this month.

I'll go with what everyone else wants :)

Well, sounds like there's still some interest, which is good to hear!  I like the idea that some people have stated to forgo the topic and have people just throw some ideas out and then vote on one book (maybe we can even fulfill a challenge or 2 that way, I know a few of us have some challenge books in common).  It also sounds like people like having the book broken into sections to accomodate those that get to it at different times in the month.  I'm thinking we'd still want a "leader" for each month, just to have someone run the nominations/vote, and put up the postings to break it into sections.  Is anyone interested in doing this for May?  If not, Shelley - maybe you and I can pick a book we both want to read (another good suggestion by Valli), and if anyone else decides to join in, then even better!

I love doing the BOMs, and I think I've read all but one or two of them.  I hvaen't started this month's though, and honestly won't get to it until the late part of April.

I like having themes, but I can see the argument for having voting instead of random picking of the winner.

Okay, I'm going to weigh in again. I agree w/ Mimi ... I like themes ...

Just as before, we can take suggestions, get a "short list" of 6 or so books & have a vote. The theme can be as narrow or as broad as the "host" wants, but I like some degree of commonality amongst the titles in question.

Love, love, love the idea of having the book broke down by sections or chapters, etc. for discussion.

OK - sounds the themes aren't so bad, but voting definitely seems like the way most people want to go.  I agree with that as well.

So, how do we want to manage future months?  Do we want to do one every month, every other, or just wait for volunteers to run each month?  I think we should try to plan to have a book picked 2-3 weeks before the next month to give people time to get it.

Wow!  Lots of good discussion here, and ideas and suggestions!  I'm going to take the easy way out and say, "Whatever is fine by me!"  I have no preference.  For the most part I take part in the BOMs, except for when time is an issue or I'm not interested in the topic or book (or when I bail on Michelle just because I can't get into the book that I myself nominated, LOL!!).  So, I'll keep watching and go with whatever is decided. I truly do love the discussions of the BOMs.

Michelle - You and I do seem to have a lot of similar likes and dislikes.  When we have time, we should compare our HF Challenge Lists and see if we have any books in common or any challenges we are both undecided on that we could perhaps read the same book.  We could read them together and discuss here - inviting anyone else who wants to join us, of course, to do so.  In fact it may be fun if anyone interested checks over other people's  Challenge Lists to look for the same books to find a buddy to read with!

ETA - I have a soft spot in my heart for the BOMs since participating in the first one is how I met my main man, Uhtred!  ;)

Just wanted to chime in here to say I've enjoyed the BOM's I've participated in and would like to do more of them.

I have enjoyed the themes, but I think I'd like to vote on books rather than choosing them randomly. A few times, I was really excited about a nominated book, and then it didn't get picked.

Michelle, you had some very good questions ... "So, how do we want to manage future months?  Do we want to do one every month, every other, or just wait for volunteers to run each month?  I think we should try to plan to have a book picked 2-3 weeks before the next month to give people time to get it."

Having never participated in a BOM discussion here, I am reluctant to jump off into the deep end and host one for May, but I do have a theme suggestion if someone else would like to pick up the ball & run with it. (Nothing like mixed metaphors, is there?!?)

Since May is traditionally a *busy* month for most of us for any number of reasons, let's do something light and fun, i.e., a theme of "Oldies but Goodies." Suggested authors could include Georgette Heyer, Victoria Holt, Daphne du Maurier, Jean Plaidy, etc., etc.

If no one wants to do this theme, I'll hold it in reserve for another time when Linda & I are comfortable hosting a BOM.

Well, I would volunteer but I'm going to Italy in May so I won't really be around much.  Looks like if no one steps up, we may have to take a break for May and delay the next BOM with the new "voting" format until June.  If someone would like to take the lead for that, let us know.

Shelley - maybe you and I should pick a book we'd like to read in May, as you suggested, off our TBR list.  If you want, you can PM me your email address and I'll send you my huge TBR pile to see what we have in common.

Kelly - sounds like a great theme idea!

I would like to participate in BOM challenge, but I haven't seen too much that I am interested in.  If it was something that interested me, I would totally be in it!
