Crazy book! Dean Koontz is brilliant at writing the latest "nightmare". In this book, a man is afraid to fall asleep because each morning when he wakes up, something strange has happened. One morning, he's covered in blood. Another morning he finds a bag of cash next to him. He finally hires two private investigators to help him. What they uncover shocks them all!

This is one of Koontz's earlier books, but is one of his finest. Husband and wife private investigators are caught up in supernatural events as they help a client who must continue to teleport himself to escape superhuman forces out to destroy him. The wife's brother, a wonderful character who has Down's syndrome, is also telepathic and provides a great counterpoint to all of the evil against which they must fight. Koontz is a master of making the unbelievable believable. A great read.

This book was great. I started reading it at the same time as another book, and it was so good I put the other book aside to totally concentrate on this book. It grabbed by total attention by the second chapter and was very engaging. I strongly recommed it to any Sci-fi reader and it is a definite reader for anyone who like Dean Koont's books.

A very fitting review:

"A master storyteller, sometimes humorous, sometimes shocking, but always riveting. His characters sparkle with life. And his fast-paced plots are wonderfully fiendish, taking unexpected twists and turns." - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Once again Koontz had provided me with a book that was full of thrills and suspense. I had a hard time putting this book down and had to hang my "DO NOT DISTURB" sign.

I loved this book. I couldn't hardly get anything done until I finished it. Not what I was expecting when I started reading but it gripped me from the first few pages. Masterfully written with great characters. I laughed, cried and didn't sleep well that first night. Couldn't ask for more in a book. I highly reccommend anything written by Dean Koontz.

This is another of my top 3 favorite Koontz books. Story is excellent with all of my favorite elements - supernatural/sci-fi & suspense! Without giving too much of the story away, Frank's family turns out to all have different supernatural powers. The battle between good and evil comes down to a tired and bewildered man trying to figure out his powers to save people around him from the powers of his brother.

Excellent! Frank Pollard continues to go through bizarre transportations only when he sleeps. The key to the mystery lies within a boy with Downs Syndrome. Classic Koontz!

This book was terrifying, gripping, haunting, a real page turner. It contains a classic duel of good and evil. Synopsis: Frank Pollard awakens in an alley sensing he is in great danger. However, not remembering anything except his name. He takes refuge in a motel and awakens with blood on his hands. Over the next few days he fears sleep because each time he wakes up he discovers strange objects in his hands or in his pockets. Bobby and Julie Dakota are a husband-and-wife detective team. They specialize in high-ticket corporate security investigations. However, they help Frank Pollard out of compassion and curiosity. But as the Dakotas begin to discover where Frank goes when he sleeps, they are drawn into ever-darkening realms where they encounter the figure stalking Frank. Thomas is Julie Dakota's Down's-syndrome brother. To him, death is the "Bad Place".

Classic Koontz horror story with the weird ending. fun read
reviewed The Bad Place on + 149 more book reviews
Koontz soars beyond the limits of Midnight and his other bestsellers. The principal characters, married detectives Julie and Bobby Dakota, agree to help frightened amnesiac Frank Pollard figure out what he does when he's asleep. (Not only can Frank not remember his past, but he wakes up mornings to find mysterious bags of large-denomination bills by his bed.) In due course, Frank and the Dakotas join forces against murderer Candy Pollard and his weird sisters, who want to kill Frank--evidently the sole human in the monstrous family. Candy extends psychic feelers toward potential victims, emanations that are sensed by Julie's younger brother Thomas. A Down's syndrome child, Thomas is telepathically gifted and able to warn Bobby of the demons who threaten Julie. Horror follows horror with each crime perpetrated by Candy & Co. as they come ever closer to the Dakotas and other prey. Besides episodes of shriek-worthy suspense, the book features out-of-body flights, and data on insects and gems of impossible origins, no less unnatural than the Pollard villains, who could incite envy in Lucifer himself.

Written in the traditional Dean Koontz style, this book rocks. Plenty of mystery, psychic abilities, some gore, and a touch of science fiction. This book also offers a throw-you-for-a-loop twist at the end that you won't see coming. Seriously loved this book.
