The Ballad of the Sad Café
This is as intriguing and addicting short novel as anyone ever wrote. The author builds suspense by tempting the reader with forebodings of what will transpire in the lives of her characters. She also leads the reader down the proverbial garden path as to the denouement; at least it was not what I had expected, even after reading the editor's comments in the introduction. If you haven't read her before, this is an excellent introduction to a great yet often forgotten writer.
