Deborah,     It's interesting that you put Barbara Michael's books in the mystery genre. I volunteer at an FOL bookstore and all her books are placed in the romance section. Sometimes we have authors who are considered "crossovers", but she isn't one, at least not in our store. Our patrons always look for her in the romance section. It's interesting how many UBSs place authors in different sections.

I've read VANISH WITH THE ROSE and it was definitly a mystery and everyone in my book club agreed. It also was a very good book.

I've read a lot of her books. some are mysteries, some romance, some paranormal. I love her style of writing.  I'm restarting a collection, since my sister took all of her Barbara Michaels books with her when she moved out.

Didn't she also write mysteries under the name Elizabeth Peters? I'm thinking of the Amelia Peabody series - I'm listening to the first one in my car right now.

Yes - she is also Elizabeth Peters.  I love the Amelia Peabody series!  I'd characterize them as "gothic" for the most part, with some that are romantic suspense and some mystery.

It's interesting how many UBSs place authors in different sections.

One of my peeves!  A book seems to default to "romance" if written by a woman, and "mystery" if written by a man!  I read a broad variety of authors, and I can tell you that sometimes the only substantive difference between a "romance" and a "mystery" is the gender of the author.  I'm particularly amused when I find books with the word "mystery," "murder," "burglar," "death," in the romance section.

I haven't read any of Barbara Michael's novels.  Where should I start?  If I were to read only one of her novels, which should it be?
