This, his last book, is probably his best. A shocking expose of rampant greed, real estate scams, political corruption, environmental meddling, with a bit of spice added for amusement or maybe distraction. In ways it is a meld of The Gilded Age and Ten North Frederick with a touch of The Thanatos Syndrome, yet it still stands alone in its portrayal of a good ole boys milieu. While not a great literary work, this is still well worth the effort.

John D. MacDonald abandons Travis McGee and Florida for Good Ole Boys and financial chicanery in Mississippi. Greed leads to murder, and one good man tries to do the honorable thing. Prime MacDonald, which means it's as good as anything out there, and better than most.
