Jim Carroll is truly a gifted writer. His diary brings the New York City streets of the mid-60's to life. His vivid descriptions of growing up as a street wise kid on the mean city streets clearly paint a picture of the period.

This the best book that I have ever read. Jim Carroll has taken something so ugly and awful and made it beautiful. The movie was awful.Read the book.

Not a bad book, but left some things to be desired. At times he rambled on a little too quick with too much slang to follow along. I understand that just fits with the style/personality of the book. And it had no ending. It was literally just over, like maybe I was missing pages. Again I understand its a diary so it shouldn't end. Overall a quick read, and something that didn't take too much thought.

I watched the movie first, and I liked it. Than I read the book and LOVED it. The movie was a let down after the fact. Not only was Jim Carroll real, but he experienced so many things as a teenager that most adults have never done. He is a poet.
