A friend of mine who had fostered 55 foster babies recommended it to me. She would get a (drug addicted) newborn to sleep 5-8 hours nightly. Even though some of these babies moved on to live with relatives, mom or dad she made theri lives alot better by doing this.

The book is really great. It really worked for my fosters as well. Many of them came from families where the parents had passed them around to different caretakers who each treated them diffrently. The schedule and routine helps babied trust that their needs will be met. A newborn cries for many reasons and tring to figure out why is solved by setting a routine, knowing the baby has all that it needs.
