My sisters are kidnapping me for three days next week for my birthday (Yes its the big 50 -- showing my age!). Anyway with Mt. TBR over 400 (yikes) I'd love to have some recommendations for what book(s) to take -- I have some of the most current in there and am not adverse to buying or going to the UBS .....

I'd like something satisfying, romantic, but not too too cute -- I don't read chick lit all that much. Some of my favorites are Wulfric's story in the Mary B series and Robyn Carr's Virgin River (I'm thinking of taking Preacher along for the trip to read again) -- I have quite the assortment to choose, some first time authors to me -- Shannon McKenna, Gennita Low, Erin McCarthy, Deidre Hall, Marsha Canham (the 1st of the Robin Hood books), Kresley Cole, and some old standbys like Debbie MacComber, Linda Howard, Loretta Chase and Jane Anne Krentz and on and on!  Any thoughts or recommendations for your favorite?  I don't want to get too emotionally spent so I know not the Outlander series.  Thanks -- and all I know is I'm going someplace warm and I was told I could bring some of my books. Trish F.

Somewhere warm, hummmmm.... u might want to stay away from Shannon McKenna unless u got some ice tea to cool ya down. Hard to say. I would probably just close my eyes and grab a bunch. Have fun!!

gosh, I tend to like cutesy and sexy so any of my recs  probably won't f ly with you LOL! I like jayne ann krentz and linda howard but mostly their older stuff (krentz). I enjoyed linda howard's 'open season'..sorta funny but dont think it was cutesy. the erin mccarthy's i've read were cutesy and sexy(smart mouth and mouth to mouth). i've been toting the 1st in the robin hood series around with me for a while but haven't been in the mood yet...I just listened to 2 debbie macomber audio downloads in the past couple of months but they were a break from the norm for me - susannah's garden, back on blossom street, and 20 wishes. good but a lot of characters to keep straight.

I third the Linda Howard votes, but depending on which Erin McCarthy. I also like her. I like all Erin McCarthy books, but some of them may be more chick lit then romance. I really liked My Immortal & Fallen  (not chick lit) by her. Have fun!

Was going to say exactly the same as Rose.  McKenna is pretty heavy-duty stuff, I would save it.

Thanks Willa! - not a birthday (in years) to brag about but at least it will be fun. I like to think that I'm just well-seasoned (no not a turkey)   : )

Happy B-day, Patricia!

I would take the Debbie MacComber books, because they're short stories.  This means, if you ever find yourself enthralled by a book, you'll be done quickly.  I remember visiting a friend and not wanting to do anything at all but finish my book because of some great book I took with me.  Thats not fun lol.

Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions --- I'm packing tonight -- will update you all next week. I'm so excited....I now have stocked the fridge for the husband and son and just have to work one more day ---- Linda Howard is definitely coming and I did buy a new anthology at walmart with Mary Balogh, Stephanie Laurens, Jacqui D and Candice Hern -- looks promising - Still taking a couple of others -- I have a narrowed down pile including the suggestions above I have to sort through and pick from... Maybe I'll even get my first pedicure while I'm away - Egads. Thanks again to all for the feedback. Trish : ) Doing the happy dance!!!

I'm back with bright red toes from a whirlwind couple of days in Las Vegas - Had a blast, got to sit by the pool and read and on the plane so I did get a couple of books read... Linda Howard was hysterical  with Open Season - loved the condom scene. We flew Southwest airlines and my sisters made sure to tell the flight attendant it was my birthday -- need I say more -- And I was reading that book and he comes up one time and reads over my shoulder -- makes up stuff saying it out loud -- "And then he kissed her and then.....(I was so glad I was NOT reading the condom scene at that point!!) -- Read the new"It Happened one Night anthology" Liked the stories - Even Stephanie Laurens was a little out of her normal pattern  - the stories had a few "AWWWW! moments" sentimental and cute. Candace Hern had a continuation of a character in her recent series ''' Wilhemina which I liked as the story went on.  I did forget the Marsha Canham book, Kim, but I promise to read soon. I also read Phantom Waltz by Catherine Anderson where the heroine is in a wheelchair that someone recommended -- really liked that one too -- But we found plenty of time to go out -- What a den of iniquity!!! But it was great for a few days. And I've caught up marking all the mail received in the meantime so thanks all!! Trish :)
