When I was on vacation I bought Lover Awakened by JR Ward because I'd heard so many good things about it. Plus it was said that the hero is the most tortured in the series and I'm a sucker for that ;)

I finally picked it up and started reading it last night and didn't want to put it down and go to bed!  I can't believe I'm liking the book so much. 1. I don't like vampire stories and 2. when I first heard the names of the heroes I actually didn't believe an author would do that!

I hang my head in shame that I ever doubted. I'm still in shock that I like a book that has a vampire hero. I'm being corrupted! This is the first paranormal I'm enjoying. I tried the Men of T-Flac series and I couldn't get into them and just reposted all of them without reading except for the Edge ones because I think I might enjoy those somewhat.

So consider me a convert to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

I have the 1st in my TBR pile. I also haven't been crazy about paranormal but I've gotten hold of a few that have changed my mind!

Some paranormals are better than others Barbara.  Just like with "regular" romance.  ;-)

I was disappointed by Lover Awakened but I did like Kiss and Tell by Cherry Adair. I've got the second one in my TBR but haven't had the chance to read it yet. Maybe I'll take a couple of yours off your shelf for you :)

I picked up 5 of Tara Janzen's Steele Street books (Crazy Hot, Crazy Cool, etc...) but didn't get into the first one. I thought I'd give them one more try before posting them all (crazy hot is on my shelf right now though).

I think I overdid it on the paranormals because no paranormal romances seem to appeal to me anymore. I guess I'm just tired of that whole "magical soulmate, bondmate, lifemate" premise that EVERY paranormal romance seems to want to include in the storyline.

That's what I love about PBS. I can try lots of different types of romance genres for only the cost of postage. I don't have to spend a lot of money only to find out I don't like a book.

I don't know that paranormals will ever be my romance genre "have to reads." I'm truly a Regency Romance fan and never get tired of those, even if I can figure out the plot within the first 20 pages.  But I am enjoying J. R. Ward so far. She's a very good writer in my opinion. This is going to sound strange, but I like her version of vampires. The only other vampires I've really liked is Promise in Rob Thurman's Leandros Brothers series--Promise is just way cool and I love her. And I do like Tanya Hoff's vampires. But that's my vampire limit.

You might like Lara Adrian or Susan Sizemore if you're enjoying Ward.

Another writer with an interesting vampire premise is Lyndsay Sands, though her books are hit and miss for me.

I think of a lot of paranormals as being another way to spin the "beauty and the beast" storyline.  Using vampires or other "beasts" is twist on giving us a hero to save in the end, if that makes sense.   Most of them aren't like the traditional horror story versions of vampires or werewolves or whatever!

Anyway, yeah -- that series is hard to resist!  I think Lover Eternal and Lover Awakened were my favorites, but it's all one big continuing story so I've found the whole thing to be a lot of fun!

Yesterday I received a $25 gift certificate for Amazon. I'd already ordered book 5 from PBS but all the others I had to put on wishlist. So I decided to take the plunge and order the other books in the series. The best thing? It was totally free because they were having some sort of 4 for 3 sale and I got one of the books for free. My total order came to just under $25 and it had qualified for free shipping so I was very happy. Plus I figure when I finish the books--some folks on this list are going to be happy!
