I live in spitting distance of Phoenix, AZ--it's fairly big(you know 5th biggest city or something--big enough anyway), so why does everything I mail, regardless of where it's going go to Bell, CA?  I'm pretty sure that's not on the way to most of the places I'm mailing things(generally, eastern places).  Any thoughts?

It's a hub and spoke system, just like the airlines use, and the closest hub to you is in Bell.

Bell, California is your regional sorting center for Media Mail.  Mine is Federal Way, although other classes/rates are processed locally at different facilities than Media Mail...go figure lol!

Oh, the infamous Bell, California! lol I have had so many books go through there, some had stayed there for days on end, while others have left quickly.I'm from Michigan and all my books go to Warrendale, PA., as it is the sorting facility for our area. I have had books coming to me from cities 2 hours north of me go all the way to Warrendale and then back to me. lol

Bell, CA is the southern CA regional package sorting center.

Richmond, CA is the northern CA package center - and lately it seems like about 1/4 of my books are going through Bell instead of Richmond which is odd.

if you use DC a lot, you start to recognize the names of the regional centers.  :)

Bell, CA is the media mail hub AND the black hole of many a PBS book.  Some ultimately get shaken out and eventually end up at their destination while others simply vanish, never to be seen or heard from again.

They told me Richmond doesn't exist anymore. Nothing of mine has gone to Richmond (18 miles from me ... but you know that! lol) in months and months. It all goes to the hole in Bell. While they were phasing Richmond out I was getting some stuff going to both places and then Bell gradually took over. I had no idea anything was even going to Richmond anymore ... I figured if anyone's stuff would it would be mine since I'm close to it. But hey, that would efficiency! lol

In fact, my stuff will go DOWN to Bell and back up to Oregon or Washington or Utah ... or what have you. It's the stupidist thing.

My first class mail still goes to Oakland, however.

really?  hmm.  i just checked and none of my last 10 outgoing packages have been scanned there.  i wonder if they're all going to Bell and just mostly not getting scanned?  it would explain why my packages feel like they're taking longer.

that's totally weird though, because my stuff still comes *in* through Richmond.  i just double-checked and 7 of my last 11 incoming packages with DC went through Richmond.  (and the ones that didn't were usually First Class and went directly to San Jose.)  i'll have to ask my Dad the next time i talk to him if he knows what's going on.

Well, that's screwy. After you mentioned your stuff coming "in" through Richmond, I checked mine and the stuff (at least what I looked at) does still go through Richmond coming in! Why not going out?!?!?

Since Bell happened, they stuff is taking longer. Oh well. Let me know what your dad says, I'm curious to know what Richmond is doing -- it's obviously still in existence!.

I live in Sacramento, and almost everything I mail out goes to Bell first.

On the packages that I've received with DC on them, they seem to go through Richmond...so at least it seems consistent--consistent with what I don't know!
