Hi.

My name is Shanna & my best friend "Opie" ,an American Pitbull Terrier , died at the animal hospital yesterday. I think she was going on 7. She died from an  infection that shut her kidneys down & the dr.  said that she also had had renal failure for awhile. I did not know that the life expectancy of a pit bull was only 5-7 years. She did not know she was a D-O-G.  She ate with us, slept with us, went wherever we went. By the time I knew something was wrong with her it was too late. Saturday she was fine & Sunday am  near death. I took her to the vets farm which is near my husbands, but his hospital is 30 minutes away.  Since she was not dehydrated( I force fed her water) we decided to take her Monday am.   She died about this time yesterday. 8:30 am. I didn't know I would never see her again, when  I took her to the vet. But I knew she was very very sick.

 I am so sad.

 Sorry to bother everyone, Shanna

Shanna,

Thank you for telling about your dear Opie.  It hurts so much to lose a dear friend.  The more you talk about it, the better.

Thank you so much.  I have not grieved like this in so long, and I have been through many tragedies. It hurts more than a  person dying. I guess because animals have such big hearts & most people do not. Thank you for your reply. It means so  much to me.

~Peace ~

My heart goes out to you.  Losing a pet is always so hard! But you can be assured that he was happy with you in the welcome home you provided him with.....it was you that made the difference in his life.....

I'm very sorry for your loss.  It's so hard to lose an animal that's been part of your life.  I hope you find peace soon.

Thank you everyone. I will recover.. It's just sad . I feel like I should have noticed it. But the pit bull is a very tough breed & they hardly show you their pain. Then when they finally show it , it's too late.

i am so sorry. i know how hard it is to lose someone you dearly love and it makes no difference if it is a person or pet. maybe after a little time has passed, maybe think of bringing another special animal into your life to love. there are so many out there who need good homes. my prayers are with you and take special care of yourself.

I'm so sorry Shanna!  I know pets are so much more a part of our daily lives than many of our friends or relatives are!  It sounds like she was very fortunate to have you in her life.

Thank you. It seems like a long 3  weeks , & it has been. I have finally quit crying so much. Dogs have such pure little hearts, I know they must go to Heaven or Rainbow bridge. I am comforted by that thought.

 Thank  you  & Peace,

 Shanna

Hi Shanna,

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. We lost our lab last fall and it was so hard I jus wasn't prepared. I made a page for him at the Rainbow Bridge site, it gives me good memories when I go and look at it.

Hold him in your heart and let his memories be there for you, once again, I'm so sorry.

Thank You,

I have put other dogs on Rainbow Bridge, But I cant do Opie yet. I will eventually. I live in rural Oklahoma  & wish we had some kind of pet cemetary. I told my husband to see if our local animal shelter offered cremation services. So I could have her with me.  But they dont. I know some places do in large cities.  I would have liked a casket , but she was too big.  She got sick on a Sunday, the day before she was fine??? Then Sunday BAM!!!!!! Near death???? She died on Tuesday at 8:00 am. She died while sleeping. She looked so peaceful.

Since she was a pit bull,  we often took her to my husbands farm, a river runs behind it. She could play & swim without a leash or worries.  We buried her out there. I got the hole really deep. It took 3 of us to dig it. She was a very obese pit bull. Then I put rockes  & silk flowers on top.  Then I decided to have my husband take a large sack of Ok/ Tx wildflower mix & pour them all over the top . He did, & the next day it rained , so I hope they come up. I cannot bring myself yet to go to her grave. Her soul is not there anyways. I  do believe dogs have souls and that they are more pure than any human heart.

1 person died for me (Christ), the only other creature on Earth that would have , would have been Opie. She would have died protecting me & my husband.

Ok, thats all I can talk about now.  But I am talking, which is a sign that I am healing.

Thank you for all your kind words & advice, it has helped tremendously.

 ~Peace~

So sorry -- it's a really hard thing to deal with.  I'm dealing with a pit bull now that was dumped in our yard almost 2 weeks ago, and she is teaching me a lot.  In the short amount of time I've had her, I am changing all my thinking about the breed.  I have 4 dogs now, and have had dogs all my life, and never a sweetheart like this.  I know I am going to be really sad when I find a home for her (can't keep her since we have 4 dogs already) and have to let her go, so I can only imagine what you are going through.  My thoughts are with you.

I missed this the first time around too...I'm so sorry for your loss. I know you're still feeling it. I  have 2 girls (both 7) german shepherd and lab and they are like children to me. I'm not sure how I'll cope w hen their time comes but I do hope it's peaceful and quick..I dread having to make 'that decision' even though I know it's the best thing to do.

I've seen a lot of pits at the dog park and most have been very pretty tough dogs. german shepherds (at least mine) tend to hide pain also. mine cut her paw open and walked back to teh house and I didn't notice til I saw blood on the tile then took her to the vet, came home and walked back the way we came and saw it on the sidewalk...the only clue I would've had was that for once she didn't pull a head but walked behind me...now I notice she does this when she tears her paw pad at the dog park...she'll get right behind me then stop limping when she sees me looking. now my lab on the other hand will let you know quick and milk it for all it's worth!

anyways, my thoughts are with you and I know how sad you must be feeling.

I know about how you feel. I had a dog for 17 years and he died 2 years ago. I still think about him. But I know that he is in a better place and that someday we will meet again. Sure I have another dog now but it still hurts to think about him.

How are you doing Shanna?  I missed this when you posted it.  I'm sorry.  My heart goes out to you.  It's so hard I know.     I don't think we ever get over it, but time helps some.  I think it helps us forget the bad/sad stuff and remember all the good things while they were here.   Just try to remember what a great life you gave Opie.
