This was a great book! I loved the humor and the unusual obstacles these two had to overcome--also includes an interesting cast of friends and their attempts to find love. Leading lady is a not-so-slim gal with poor self-esteem and main man is purrrfect.

I love Minerva Dobbs! She's tough, smart, funny, curvy, sassy and has a fabulous shoe collection (which just speaks to my heart). Upon hearing that she's become part of a guy bet, she decides to take the guys for their money. Meanwhile Calvin Morrisey can't get over Minerva's shoes, her delicious kisses, her womanly figure and her witty comebacks. To top it off, his nephew loves her too... now who can resist that. With their friends in the fracas, it's just page after page of hilarious antics and ridiculous rationalizations. A definite winner.

This was my first J Crusie, but not my last! I really enjoyed this book. It's a romance, but not too lovey, filled with lots of jokes, snarks, and fun characters

I think I'm the only person in the world who didn't love this book. It had its moments, yeah, and was mildly funny. But I couldn't relate to any of the characters, everyone seemed to have the same snarky sense of humor, 90% of the book was dialog -- which started to wear me down -- and overall it seemed glib and self-conscious. Others found the food themes to be delightful, but after the fifth or sixth mention, they just felt like a crutch (likewise the stray cat). All that said, Crusie is still a much better writer than most modern romance authors -- I just wish that were a bigger compliment.

this would have been a great boy meets girl, fall in love, live happily ever after story. there were enough twists and turns along the way to keep the story interesting and too cliched. i was dissapointed with the total train wreck inserted at the end - seriously, can you actually believe that 2 sets of parents would be mortified to hear that there 30-something children were going to consummate their relationship???
Jennifer Crusie is one of my very favorite authors. For contemporary adult fun, you can't beat her books! Each book is worth the read. Thanks 4 reading.

This is a cute story and since the heroine is a little slimness challenged it was easy for me to identify. Lots of easy banter between the characters and fashion and food descriptions. Pretty good fluff.

I really liked this book! The characters were well thought out and thier interactions was fun to read. What was most enticing about the book is how the main characters (Min & Cal) knew each other better than they knew themselves, thus allowing acceptance of what they thought were weeknesses. Just the thought of someone knowing you better than yourself, understanding your strengths and flaws, and head over heals in love with that knowledge is intoxicating. The book is funny and insightful. I like books that surprise me, I thought it would be a light and fluffy read, but this one gave me some food for thought as well.

Minerva Dobbs knows that Cal Morrisey asked her to dinner on a bet. The only reason she went out with him was to get back at her ex-boyfriend who bet against Cal. When the evening is over, they cut their losses and agree never to see each other again. But fate has other plans and before long Min and Cal meet again.
I loved this book! Even though I've had no time to read this week, I kept trying to squeeze in a few pages when I had time. Min and Cal are a fantastic couple. The epilogue is great. It tells what happened to every character...not just Min and Cal. I wish more authors would do that. My rating: 5 Stars.

I loved this book. It is cute and funny. It reminds me of the humor of Janet Evanovich. This book is a great book to read on vacation.

OMG, I LOVED this book ! I could not put it down between the one-liners and the complete synicism of the main characters, I couldn't wait to see what happened. Jennifer Crusie is a delightful author who understands character development and gives you what you want and need in a story. Every time Min gives Cal a verbal jab, I wanted to yell “You go, girl!” and every time the two of them had the thoughts of the other one in their head, I wanted to yell, “Go for it, you idiot !”. A completely delightful book that you will not want to put down.

Thirty-three-year-old Minerva Dobbs is annoyed when her current boyfriend dumps her three weeks before her sisters' wedding. But she's downright furious a few moments later when she overhears her now "ex" boyfriend bet hunky Calvin Morrisey that he can't take her home and bed her. In fact, she's so angry at them both that she lets Cal take her to dinner and decides to string him along until after her sisters' wedding. Minerva pegs Cal as a handsome "used car salesman of seducers." Cal thinks Minerva is a "cranky, starving, risk-averse statistician." But Minerva's hormones keep whispering "this one," although she knows the gorgeous Cal isn't the man for her practical, white-cotton-bra, several-pounds-over-thin, self. And Cal is blindsided by the lust he feels for the voluptuous, sensual woman he glimpses behind Min's actuary exterior. While Cal and Min struggle to deal with their mutual distrust and attraction, their friends and families try their best to interfere and direct the progression of the unlikely romantic connection.
Bet Me is unabashedly, irrepressibly romantic. In the wacky, wonderful world of Min and Cal, author Jennifer Crusie leaves no humorous situation unexplored--no potential comedic cauldron left unstirred--no hysterically funny complication left undeveloped. The reader is treated to a seemingly mismatched hero and heroine who fling caution to the winds to explore their unexpected attraction. The sexual tension is hot, the dialogue witty and wickedly sarcastic, and the supporting cast of secondary characters hilarious. Like Min's favorite Krispy Kreme donuts, this novel is rich and sinfully delicious.

Awesome book...entertaining, witty and sexy story. Great when you're in the mood for a lighthearted read. I've read it two or three times and was a little reluctant to post it on PaperbackSwap!

It all starts with a misunderstood bet between two men over heard by the intented woman. All kinds of antics occurr between all three characters. In the end the good man gets the girl, but which one is it? Very entertaining reading.

Fun and offbeat romance. Different heroine than most, in a fun way.

Minerva is a little overweight and is dumped by an X boyfriend because she turns him down. Charm boy, Cal comes into her life as he accepts a bet to bed her in 3 weeks. They each have three friends that play an active role in helping or hindering their budding relationship. Impossible parents do all they can to prevent their falling in love. Love wins out. The story was good entertainment but a bit too sexy for my taste and language too foul to please me.

A really fun book - I like all Jennifer Crusie's work. She develops her characters fully and the dialogue is always witty. From the back: "...Crusie delivers a novel about long shots, risk management, true love and great shoes...".

I love Jennifer Crusie's books! I read almost NO romance, but I have to read her books. They are full of great characters and witty dialog and steamy love scenes. This is probably my second favorite of hers after Welcome to Temptation, but it's hard to say which is the best since they're all good!

Witty! A lighthearded story.
Jennifer Cruise has yet to disappoint me! humourous and loveable!
I loved this book! I could hardly put it down. Funny, light and easy read. Can't wait to read something else by the author.
My absolute favorite book. One I have read many times. The characters are realistic and flawed. Jennifer Cruisie writes entertaining reads that pull you in and keep you turning pages.
I really liked this book. Normally I don't touch Chick Lit, but this one was LOL funny all the way through
Fun book. Would recommend for an easy fun read.
What a great book. A cute story showing how two completely different people can get swept up in the beginnings of a relationship - and fight it the whole way.
I loved the storyline where couple meets in the bar based on a bet. I don't want to over share because I want everyone to go check out this book, such a great summer read. It is light and cute.
The one issue I found was - my copy that I have been moving with me for awhile was a mass market paperback. I had not read a mass market paperback in awhile and now I know why - I hated it. It was impossible to read on the treadmill. I had to use two hands to read it. I officially will avoid mass market in the future, the price does not entice me anymore.
Back to the book review - I really don't want to share much for fear of ruining such a cute little book. But I would absolutely pass this book onto all the ladies in my life.

This book is one of my favorites from Jennifer Cruise. I love the "not so coincidental" incidents. Very fun and humorous book.
This book seems to have been written as an insulting cliche for fat women. Maybe it's just supposed to be funny and doesn't quite make it. Here's the main character: She's "not beautiful" and is overweight. She is a scowling, self-deprecating actuary who dresses in gray boxy suits and denies herself carbs and butter. She has pretty toes and wears cute shoes. Here's the plot: Gorgeous hunk takes her out on a bet, and puts a bite of krispy Kreme doughnut in her mouth to shut her up. The look on her face is so sensuous that he continues to date her by putting doughnuts, ice-cream, and chicken marsala in her mouth just to see that look again. He persuades her that she is not fat, just voluptuous, round and sexy. She begins to wear lace. She wins him from the ex-girlfriend who looks like a Victoria Secret model and who loves to tell men that she has a perfect body and is fantastic in bed. (Girlfriend also enjoys untying her clingy wrap dress to show them her perfect body in her transparent pink underwear.) When our hero and heroine first make love, foreplay is tying her up naked and feeding her Krispy Kremes while he licks icing off her breasts. Can you guess the conclusion? He proposes to her by putting a Krispy Kreme doughnut on her finger!
Oh, and the ex-girlfriend? She was writing a book, till someone told her no one wants to read about how another beautiful girl gets the beautiful man of her dreams. I think I'm mostly mad at the girl at the bookstore who recommended the book to me. I keep wondering if she thought I look like fat woman desperate for love and doughnuts.

This is one of the best books I've ever read! Funny and engaging from start to finish! Jennifer Crusie - thank you so much for writing this book!
This was a cute story. Believable plot, well-developed characters. Overall a fun read.
I had never read a Jennifer Cruise book until I started Paperback Swap! LOVE HER! Though I am a lover of CHICK LIT I am not a lover of ROMANCE Novels-way too predictable.
Crusie is technically a romance writer but her stuff reads much more like Chick lit. ( For me Chick lit is about 3 dimensional women who have careers and children and aren't focused solely on "A MAN" Whereas ROMANCE genre seems to be 2 dimensional woman who only want 1 thing ( and it isn't good sex ; ) Please ladies - this is just my opinion -= not trying to insult anyone's taste. I just think Crusie straddles the chick lit/romance category very nicely. her books have GREAT characters and loads of humor. Plus Crusie seems to really like animals as they seem to be in all of her stories.
BET ME is Crusie at her best. Fantastic characters with a REALLY nice subplot about not having to be SKINNY to be happy.
Thank you Paperback swap for turning me on to this GREAT writer!

I don't generally read romance, but the characters are surprisingly engaging in this book. The chick has some spunk, there are real people trying to keep the two lovebirds apart (rather than the usual chance events and stupidity-related problems), and there are no maternal urges in sight. Bonus points because though I hate girls who obsess about dieting, the book actually used that as a problem to deal with rather than some personality quirk. Pretty kinky sex scenes. There's light bondage!
Witty.
Very funny, with very likable characters.
Nice and light reading for a weekend afternoon
Love all Jennifer Crusie books, but this one is my favorite.
Very funny, although somewhat predictable.
Funny, sexy, quick read when you need a bit of relief from daily stresses.
Cute, fun book.
Entertaining, smart sassy, wit and romance.
Very cute modern romance!
This is a great book. Jennifer Crusie is a great author. She has a great sense of humor.
FRomthe back cover--Minerva Dobbs knows how to work the odds.Calvin Morrisey always plays to win. But when they face off, neither one is prepared because when real life meets true love, all bets are off....Funny,sexy and a fun read.
Minerva Dobbs knows that happily-ever-after is a fairy tale, especially with a man who asked her to dinner to win a bet. Even if he is gorgeous and successful Calvin Morrisey. Cal knows commitment is impossible, especially with a woman as cranky as Min Dobbs. Even if she does wear great shoes and keeps him on his toes. When they say good-bye at the end of their evening, they cut their losses and agree never to see each other again.
But Fate has other plans and it's not long before Min and Cal meet again. Soon, they're dealing with a jealous ex-boyfriend, Krispy Kreme donuts, a determined psychologist, chaos theory, a freakisly intelligent cat, Chicken Marsala, and more risky propositions than either of them ever dreamed of.. Including the biggest gamble of all..true love.

Calvin morrisey is a betting man, Min Dobbs is the current subject of his bet. 10 bucks says he can take her to dinner. 10,000 bucks says he can take her! Min is cranky, and smart, and does not want to make a commitment.
Good cast of supporting characters and a fun read.

One of my favorite Cruisie books
Two stubborn people find love after they are brought together by a bet.
This was a nice easy to read book that has you not wanting to put it down. A+
Fun read with great characters. Creative use of Krispy Kremes!
I loved this book, Minnie is a little chunky in her words and dont think anyone like Cal could love someone like her but all it took was a bet from a ex boyfreind that Cal could get Minne in his bed and the fireworks began. I loved the dialog
Excellent book. This book really had me rooting for the characters. This has to be one of my all time favorites.
Good beach book.
Jenny Crusie does funniest, sexiest and best writing in all of contemporary romance.
Really enjoyed this book. One of my favorites by Crusie

A great Book from Crusie. It's a novel about risks, true love and long shots. Hard to put it down.
JENIFER CRUSIE WRITES GREAT STUFF. IT'S QUICK, SHARP, FUNNY AND VERY VERY REAL. THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL CHARACTERS, WITTY AND INTERESTING. THE HEROINE IS ALWAYS AN IMPERFECT WOMAN WITH A GREAT MIND AND SOUL.
classic Crusie at her best!
True to form for Jennifer Crusie. Fast paced, entertaining read.
couldn't put the book down- one of her best IMO - great beach reading!
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Crusie delivers a novel about long shots, risk management, true love, and great shoes. I loved this book. I have read a lot of Ms. Crusie's novel and have found them all to be a great read.

Couldn't put it down
Very good book! Couldn't put it down.
Minerva Dobbs is a character I could really identify with! A 33-year-old, carb-loving, statistics-quoting, chubby brunette actuary who adopts a mangy one-eyed orange cat ... Minerva is in desperate need of a suitable date for her sister's wedding. ...

Great weekend read. I love a happy ending!
Nice quick read, enjoyed this book.
This was a very light and entertaining read. A very good beach book
An entertaining twist on the Blind dates
Funny and light read. I really liked this story alot!!
Very fun, easy read!
As a rule, I don't read romance novels (and in my defense, the ones you see on my bookshelf are ones from a co-worker that she gave me to post)...this one was a HOOT...I mean, laugh out loud stuff. I really liked Min alot, because she's not a toothpick, and she obviously enjoys life & food....I just finished this & thouroughly enjoyed it.
Awesome read by a wonderful author. You will laugh out loud for sure.
I have only read a few of Crusie's books, however, this is the best one I have read. Very funny.
Funny, steamy book about a man who cannot understand why he is so attracted to a slightly overweight woman. One of Crusie's best books.
Hilarious, steamy funny and a delight to read! A novel about long shots, risk management, true love and great shoes!
Well, Jennifer Crusie is always great in my opinion. Her books always make me laugh because inevitably there is a quirky animal thrown into the mix to mess with the main characters. Her books are really witty, great dialogue, good romance, sexy....what else can I say. I have read everything of hers twice over and will always go back for more.
Jennifer Crusie's characters are real and incredibly funny--the ones in Bet Me are no exception. A great read!
LOVED this book, i love this author and read all of her books. Could not put it down! Finished it in one day...would recomend it to anyone!
I haven't found a book of hers yet that I haven't enjoyed. They lift your spirits if you're down. Funny with a good story.
loved this book. would love to see a sequel with the friends
This is the second Jennifer Crusie book I have read and it was as good as the first. Her stories are believable. A little mix of love, mystery, just a good read.
Great book!
great fun to read
Great read- one of Crusie's best EVER!
First book I read from Jennifer and it was great.
Such a cute contempory fairy tale!
Crusie is wickedly funny and this is one of my favorites!
I had never read this author before, but *totally* loved the book! Very light, witty and quite entertaining...
I absolutely love Minerva Dobbs, and Calvin is every normal girls dream! This is funny and sweet and all about the happily ever after!
This was a funny book. I liked it a lot.
Standard chick lit - but entertaining nonetheless.
Cute, sweet love story. Fast read.
One of her best so far.
A great, fun read. Romantic and extremely funny. I loved it!
I found myself laughing out loud repeatedly by page 3, and didn't look up again until page 97. This is definitely one of her best. Now that I have finished it, maybe I can get some sleep tonight!
Oh my goodness! This book has got to be my absolute favorite book by Jennifer Crusie!!! I sat in bed with my little reading light giggling until I just couldn't read any longer. Well, until my husband kicked me out of bed because it was shaking from the giggles.
If you've never read Jennifer Crusie, then this is the one to start with.
And if you've already am a fan of hers, yet haven't read this book...what's wrong with you??? Hurry up and get from someone! You won't be disappointed!!!

Funny book!
Minerva Dobbs knows that happily ever after is a fairy tale, ecspecially witha man who asked her to dinner to win a bet. Even if he is goreous and successful Calvin Morrisey.

Wonderful book about a man who asks out a woman to win a bet.
Jennifer Crusie is a great author and this is one of her best! The characters are colorful without being too cartoonish. A very funny, entertaining book.
Good chic book. Clever, interesting.
This was a really fun book to read. Highly recommend.
Jennifer Cruise does it again. Bet Me is a funny, romantic book about a man likes to play and a woman who likes to play it safe. Throw in meddling friends, 2 jealous exes, overbearing parents, and a cat named Elvis, and you have a great "get away from it all" book.
Loved this "fairy tale" story about the chubby girl and the beautiful man. My favorite part is that you actually find out what happens next.
A fast, fun read. Light, but entertaining!
Not your typical female lead, its nice to read a book about characters that aren't perfect.
I had never read anything by this author before, and I was very impressed. I definitely reccomend this book to everyone! It was a fun love story!
Another good book by Jennifer.
I love Jennifer Crusie--her books never disappoint--and this was yet another smart, funny read.

Minerva Dobbs thought David Fisk might be the one she\'s been waiting for, until he dumps her three weeks before her sister Diana\'s wedding. Min soon realizes just how lucky she is to be rid of David when she overhears him at her favorite bar betting a handsome stranger, Calvin Morrisey, that Cal couldn\'t bed Min in a month. At first Min debates the idea of giving them both a piece of her mind, but then she remembers she still needs a date for the wedding. Why not use the all-too charming Cal just like he was going to use her, and then dump him? Of course, Min never expected that Cal might turn out to be \"the one.\" A sturdy statistician who thinks Elvis Presley is the only man worth waiting for discovers that fairy tales can come true if you are only willing to believe. New York Times best-selling Crusie maintains her winning streak in another wickedly witty, deliciously sexy contemporary romance. Finding exactly the right balance between cynicism and optimism, Crusie deftly blends snappy dialogue; quirky, irrepressible secondary characters; and two beautifully matched protagonists struggling against their romantic fate.

The chubby girl wins out in the end. Good for her.
Thirty-three-year-old Minerva Dobbs is annoyed when her current boyfriend dumps her three weeks before her sisters\' wedding. But she\'s downright furious a few moments later when she overhears her now \"ex\" boyfriend bet hunky Calvin Morrisey that he can\'t take her home and bed her. In fact, she\'s so angry at them both that she lets Cal take her to dinner and decides to string him along until after her sisters\' wedding. Minerva pegs Cal as a handsome \"used car salesman of seducers.\" Cal thinks Minerva is a \"cranky, starving, risk-averse statistician.\" But Minerva\'s hormones keep whispering \"this one,\" although she knows the gorgeous Cal isn\'t the man for her practical, white-cotton-bra, several-pounds-over-thin, self. And Cal is blindsided by the lust he feels for the voluptuous, sensual woman he glimpses behind Min\'s actuary exterior. While Cal and Min struggle to deal with their mutual distrust and attraction, their friends and families try their best to interfere and direct the progression of the unlikely romantic connection.
