This is the 4th book in the Detective Lou Boldt Series - I'll list them all for you at the end of this review.

I just finished Ridley Pearson's "Angel Maker", wherein I discovered Detective Lou Boldt! He is fast becoming my favorite detective! Boldt's character always seems to come across as one of the most believable in the "police fiction" genre. He presents a mixture of determined desparation and fatalistic energy, he directs all of his efforts to helping everyone else but himself. As in "Angel Maker", Boldt finds himself searching frantically for a serial killer - only this time the killer is a homicidal arsonist - seemingly trying to set Seattle, Washington on fire.

If you're already familiar with Detective Boldt, I won't bore you with more praise - but in this book, I think Pearson outdid himself! The character development from "Angel Maker" to this book is wonderful! The characters GROW and CHANGE, to the point where you become involved in them! Pearson has used all the tools of a good writer in this book; Well developed characters, driving plotline, twists & turns, human elements, suspense, surprises - it's sorta like sitting down to a seven-course meal instead of a Macky D's. This book will fill you up - but leave you wanting more! You'll probably go looking for the rest of the books in the list! I know that's what I'm going to do!

If any of you are from the Northwest - namely the Seattle area, you may find things familiar to you - that is the setting for this novel.

If asked - I would probably put Ridley Pearson on line with John Saul & Dean Koontz as far as being able to capture your attention, and hold it all the way through their books! This is a good book! If you have the opportunity, try to get Pearson's books in the order written - that way you can involve yourself in the development of the characters from book to book. That's what I'm doing! I started with book #2, and jumped to book #4 - I lost something along the way!

Ridley Pearson's Book List:

1. Undercurrents
2. The Angel Maker
3. No Witnesses
4. Beyond Recognition
5. The Pied Piper
6. First Victim
7. Middle of Nowhere
8. The Art of Deception
9. The Body of David Hayes

A Lou Boldt and Daphne Matthews mystery. This is the story of a deadly, taunting game of cat and mouse, where the stakes are raised to a burning point that might spell disaster for Boldt - and the City of Seattle.

This is a darn good, riveting listen. We played this on a road trip and it kept even my husband interesting. Something was always happening, and happening well. And too, while there was some child abuse, there were many moments of tenderness. I recommend this.
