I liked this book and anyone who likes horses should read it.
Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman to a painfully overworked cab horse. Throughout, Sewell rails--in a gentle, 19th-century way--against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty's fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse-human relationships to human-human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all. (Ages 9 to 12)-
Black Beauty....this is a great classic that never goes out of style!
"Adapted for young readers and fully illustrated"
An adaptation of the classic book. Reading level 3.0. The cover is different than the one shown.
This is the third time I have read this book. It's amazing how much I remembered. Read it when I was a child, read it to my children and just now. This delightful story depicts both the positive and negative treatment of horses by humans who love, care and understand them, know no better, don't care, or use them for their own purposes. At times it's sad and at others it's a warm, fuzzy read.
Great book, wonderful!! Especially for animal/horse lovers. A great book for readers of all ages. Take a peek and hope you'll enjoy!!
this is a wonderful tale for kids of all ages. The horses point of view teaches kinds (and adults about how to respect others)
***** A classic and wonderful story!
I loved this story. It's a great classic!
like they say, it's a classic
I read this book as a child, but I remember being very depressed for a few days!
Great for those who love horses.
My 4 and 5 year old kids liked reading this with their dad. There were some depressing and mean parts of the book that were a little too young for them. It was an enjoyable story for them though.
about the life of a horse and all the owners mean and nice that it went through
my 8 yr old grandaughter is reading it,not i.i did scan thru it.seemed like it would rough for her to read about death, and loss of family..but she is interested still, and reading it slowly.
From the back cover:
"Black Beauty meets both kind masters who care for him, and cruel grooms who mistreat him. As the gentle thoroughbred is sold and resold, he moves from a home in a wealthy country stable to the difficult life of a cab horse on the busy streets of London.
"This well-loved classic has been cherished for over 100 years and is now available in this beautifully illustrated keepsake edition.
"This book comes with a Black Beauty charm for you to wear, and to keep for your very own."
Black Beauty is well loved and happy at Squire Gordon's. But when the kindly old squire is forced to sell his favorite thoroughbred, Black Beauty finds out whit it is like to live with cruel, uncaring grooms and masters who overwork him. After his knees are broken in a careless accident, Black Beauty is sold and re-sold. Then, one lucky day......
Be aware this version is abridged- the story is very much intact but some of the language has been softened and some scenes are missing.
This is my all-time favorite story! There are several good life- lessons in this book teaching us how to be a good "horse" but better yet...a good person.
If u are a horse lover or a young reader this is a good book to read.
Excellent, if at times brutal, story about Black Beauty surviving some owners thriving with others. This was written at a time when horses made up much of our culture and most of our transportation, and we used them up like we are often wont to do whenever we grow arrogant as a species. Sewell wrote this to both awaken people to the suffering of horses and rouse us from our arrogance in general. Good book. A younger or sensitive child might want to wait a bit to read it, or perhaps read it only during the day and not at night. The same child will be able to bring more from the story than some older kids, as well.
A classic that I'd recommend to anyone, especially young adults.
This was written, of course, as a tract against cruelty to animals, especially horses - at a time before the invention of the automobile - but it is also an absorbing story, the autobiography of a horse. It is much better written than its American imitator "Beautiful Joe." Sewall makes you really feel what a horse had to endure, in what amounts to slavery to humans.
In his life, Black Beauty encounters all sorts of owners, from noblemen to coal carters, and the equine vicissitudes he doesn't experience himself (such as military use) are recounted to him by other horses he meets.
Most memorable is his life as a cab horse, and here I was surprised by how much discussion there was of politics and of the exploitation of the cab drivers by their employers.
This is a great children's classic! Good for horse lovers, too. Although older, the lessons of kindness and honesty are timeless. A book my kids will read!

This book is from the children's classics library. This a beautiful fancy classics cover to keep on your bookshelf for lifetime.
This children's book is sweet. It is from the perspective of a horse and all he goes through from the beginning of life to the end. At times it can be a tear jerker.

Written from the perspective of a horse, this is a strange and innovative children's book. A classic, on the forefront of the fight for animal rights. Has very few hidden themes for the adult reader looking for insights into children. No children in the book.
If your child or kid loves horses, then I'm sure they'll love this book. It is in fantastic condition except it has a name that was erased in the inside of the front cover. Someones name was in it but it got erased. You can still see the name a little bit.
