Born in 1909, Kwame Nkrumah became, in 1957, the first Prime Minister of Ghana -- the first of all colonies of black Africa to achieve political independence. In 1966 he was overthrown by a military coup d'etat. He died in exile in 1972. His body was then brought back to Ghana, where it was buried in his home village after full state honors.
Basil Davidson first met Nkrumah in 1952 and continued his acquaintance with the African leader through the years.« less
