This is an excellent book about the struggle between good and evil, and the compromises that fight often provokes. The book is filled with ironies, and subtleties that make it a great read.

This book (and the trilogy) had a lot of promise: fantasy with a small element of sci fi. (Ok, the sci fi element is a tiny back story about the planet's inhabitants arriving centuries ago via spaceship.)

The reason this book had potential is the interesting way in which magic works -- a bizarre force of nature that reacts to thoughts, dreams, and will power.

The reason the book failed to live up to the potential is the characters: no depth at all. The dialog and *emotion* hardly varied from character to character.

The plot wasn't bad, but I felt it plodded along too much and got stuck on inconsequential details. And personally, with such an interesting system of magic, I expected there to be a lot more of it.

Not a bad read if you're looking for something different, but I don't recommend putting it at the top of your list.
