Recently widowed Maggie Collier and her son return to their sleppy hometown in south Wisconsin to be closer to Jake's grandfather. The peace and quiet of her new life is suddenly shattered by the shocking murder of her father-in-law. When, Maggie discovers tht he had inadvertently stumbled onto the location of a kidnapped child, every citizen becomes a suspect. During her investigation, she crosses paths with Grant Holbrook, a lawyer following a tip about his kidnapped nephew. Together, they begin to piece together disturbing clues about a monster that lives among them. At first the title and cover made be suspect a romannce, but this is a fairly good mystery. The title alludes to a clue.
