I am really enjoying this author and the blood lines series. I like her writing style and her brand of sarcasm. The political and social commentary, and references and digs on other series didn't bother me in the previous books of this series. This book however crossed a bit of a line for me. While I still was able to put aside my discomfort of some of the subjuct manner and enjoy the book it did affect the rating I was able to give.
Keira and company discover another supernatural group living in their district and they are in danger. I found the plot transparent at that point I figured out who the nemisis was right away. I never bought any alternate views that the author tried to use to thicken the plot. It just seem a winding road to get to the point I always knew was coming. There were a few surprises along the way and some turns of events that I didn't expect that were able to keep me interested while not guessing.
My issues with the book were the views of religion and football and how they were portrayed. O.k. I know I am taking this too seriously, but really. In almost every book in this genre christianity takes a hit, vampires and weres are not known for their religion. Traditionally vampires are unholy,damned, I get that. But in this book religion, football and the team mentality was put down and made to seem as if it is only for small and simple minded. That only neanderthals and racist biggots could possibly want anything to do with football and coaches were the root of that problem. Really, really...I have read plenty in this area and I have never felt offended by the way my beliefs were construed.
So I guess that I will read the next book because this one ended on a complete cliffhanger. I try not to take my reading so seriously and certainly to never be offended by an opinion of a fictional character but, I felt this was a deeper comment than that. The whole book delt with prejudices and injustices of minorieties that are real and terribly unfortunate. So here I am up on my soap box with no where to go...I guess I will forgive Maria Lima this one, but I hope she has something outside of her own polical comments for the next book.
