Tanya Huff rocks! A female PI, her former police partner/boyfriend, and a suave vampire go up against the forces of evil in the streets of modern Toronto. Snappy dialogue, a fast-paced plot, and likeable characters... especially Henry Fitzroy, the bastard son of Henry VIII turned romance novelist by way of sexy bloodsucker.

Book #1 of Victoria "Victory" Nelson Private Detective, and vampire Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of King Henry VIII...solving crime in Toronto.

It was pretty good, as an intro to the characters, but not fantastic. I really thought that the 4th and 5th books in this series (Blood Pact and Blood Debt) were the BEST...unusual for a series to get so much BETTER as it went along!

Enjoyable, some of the concepts are a bit weak, but it's a good read - the writing is sound, the storytelling enjoyable.

Not at all what I was hoping for...it wasn't so much an awful read but it wasn't great either. The writing just seemed bland to me and it had a hard time keeping my interest. I am crossing my fingers now that book 2 will be better!

To be fair I will say tho that my expectations were rather high as I had been watching the show and loving it. I naturally assumed the books would be better but somehow the excitement just wasn't there for me.

PI Vicki Nelson is asked to find the vampire who killed Coreen's boyfriend. Vicki joins forces with Henry Fitzroy, an actual vampire, who is convinced that a demon is the murderer not a vampire. They team up to solve the mystery. Vicki's ex-partner and sometimes lover Mike Celluci also lands a hand.

Well written and very interesting series starter. I really like the characters of Vicki, Henry and Mike and hope they continue throughout the series.

It began with blood and death amid the streets of Toronto. Vicki Nelson, formerly of Toronto's homicide detain, witnessed the first attack by the force of dark magic that would seen wreak a reign of terror on the city. And as death followed death, Vicki become more and more deeply enmeshed in the desperate attempt to track down the source of the seemingly unstoppable attacks. Henry Fitzroy, vampire, and Mike Celluci, homicide detective are also both on the scene; but the dark force's killing spree puts Henry in grave danger of discovery.

It began with blood and death amid the streets of late-night Toronto. Vicki Nelson, formerly of Toronto's homicide detail, now a private investigator, witnessed the first attack by the force of dark magic that would soon wreak its reign of terror on the unsuspecting city. And as death followed unspeakable death, Vicki became more and more deeply enmeshed in an investigation which would see her renewing her stormy relationship with former partner, Mike Celluci, even as she teamed up with writer, Henry Fitzoy in a desperate attempt to track down the source of the seemingly unstoppable attacks.

Set in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This book follows the courageous and hard-headed Vicki Nelson, a private investigator, formerly of Toronto's homicide detail.

As she delves into a series of seemingly unstoppable murders, she teams up with a writer of romance novels, Henry Fitzroy, but there's more to him than meets the eye (as Vicki's suspicious on-again-off-again boyfriend, Det. Mike Celluci suspects)but Fitzroy is not an ordinary man at all, for he is a vampire.

First book in the series.
From the back of the book:

It began with blood and death amid the streets of late-night Toronto. Vicki Nelson, formerly of Toronto's homicide detail, now a private investigator, witnessed the first attack by the force of dark magic that would soon wreak its reign of terror on the unsuspecting city. And as death followed unspeakable death, Vicki bacame more and more deeply enmeshed in an investigation which would see her renewing her stormy relationship with her former police partner, Mike Cellluci, even as she teamed up with writer Henry Fitzroy in a desperate attempt to track down the source of the seemingly unstopppable attacks. For Fitzroy, the illegitimate son of Henry VIII, had knowledge of realms beyond the mrotal acquired ove rthe centuries during which he'd mastered his own insatiable needs--the life-from-death cravings of a vampire.
Henry Fitzroy had long since learned to survive without killing, learned the skills needed to blend in with the human race. But unless he, Vicki, and Mike could find the key to conquering the magic-raised menace stalking the streets of Toronto, Fitzroy's true identity might soon be exposed and his life might prove forfeit to the uncontrollable fears of humankind. And without Henry Fitzroy, mere mortals like Vicki and Mike would not long survive against the ancient force of chaos that had been loosed on their world...

" Can one ex-policewoman and a vampire defeat the magic-spawned evil which is devastating Toronto?"
