After the 1980 Presidential Election, those of us on the left were shocked, angry and mighty pissed at the results of what we thought then was the worst of all possible elections. We were scared to death with the results, a man who was already showing signs of Alzheimers and had never been all that bright to begin with was suddenly in charge of the world's largest nuclear weapons stash. And if Reagan was a nut case, the men surrounding him were escape artists from every mental health facility, criminal justice facility and home for the morally challenged in the country. We were scared stiff of what a very old very bad actor would manage to accomplish when he found himself leader of the free world.

What appeared as if by magic and pulled us through the worst years in American Government since the John Adams presidency was an unlikely hero with a big nose, a son of the South Pole who wanted just what all of us want, parental love, friendship, magic and fun. The Hero's name was Opus. Opus, Along with Milo, Binkley, Bill The Cat, and others, spent the next few years proving that if the choice was whether to cry because the President made ketchup on a hot dog count as a vegetable for the school lunch program, or to laugh instead of crying by following along with the quasipolitical doings of the cast of characters from Bloom County, then laughter was better every time. Bloom County brought many of us through one of the worst periods in American history, as the morally and ethically challenged employees of the Government wandered the world, leaving a trail of slime every where they went that often turned into shooting in one way or another. We kept our sense of humor, barely, although we finally lost it completely after Bush2 and Cheney engineered their coup de tat. Shrub left even Breathed unable to cheer us up.

These books are laugh out loud funny, must reads if for no other reason than to teach younger people what their parents found funny at the time. If you're from the center or the left, you'll laugh yourself silly.
