Patricia Cornwell is going downhill fast, or should I say she's gone downhill fast. Her early books were entertaining and well written, this book is full of poor grammar and written at such a juvenille level that I found it laugh out loud funny. I used to be a huge fan of the Scarpetta series, but with this latest book, I'm off the bandwagon. The good news that if you get it here, you won't have spent any money. I belive this book would be great for leveling a crooked table.

What I had expected to be another great crime thriller ended up being a confusing mass of high action topped off with an anti-clamatic ending. The characters are now two deminsional and not interesting. Not sure I'll read any more of the series that follows, but will still read the ones before.

This book is another in the Kay Scarpetta (forensic pathologist) series. After putting Jean-Baptiste Chandonne beinhd bars in the last book, she is forced to confront his brother in this one. As she chases him through Louisiana and the South. She must use the help of the killer to find his brother in a way that puts her uncomfortably close to him. I enjoyed it but this wasn't as good as the first few.

This was intriguing but left too many unanswered questions at the end for me. What happened to Lucy? What will become of the relationship between Kay and Benton? I don't know if there is another book after this one, but I would hope so, for those of us who need a little more closure. All in all, it was a page-turner, but rather a let down at the end.

BLOW FLY
Settling into her new life as a private forensic consultant, Kay Scarpetta agrees to investigate a cold-case in Louisiana--the baffling eight-year-old murder of a woman with a history of blackouts and violent outbursts. Then she receives news that chills her to the core: Jean-Baptiste Chandonne-the vicious and unrepentant Wolfman, who pursued her to her very doorstep--has asked to see her. From his cell on death row, he demands an audience with the legendary Dr. Scarpetta. With her friends and family by her side, Scarpetta tries to guess what sort of endgame this madman has in mind-how, if at all, it's related to the Louisiana case--and then confronts the shock of her life: a blow that will force her to question the loyalty and trust of all she holds dear...

In Blow Fly, Kay Scarpetta stands at the threshold of a new life after her work as Virginia's Chief Examiner has come to a jarring end. At the close of The Last Precinct, she knew she would have to leave Richmond if she were to find any peace. She feared she was about to be fired by the governor. More alarming, she was hounded in the media and in the courtroom, for what some claimed was her involvement in the murder of a deputy police chief. So Scarpetta packed up her belongings and set out for the warmth and solace of the Florida sun.
Her friends and family by her side, Scarpetta must unravel a twisting conspiracy with an international reach and confront the shock of her life--a blow that will force her to question theloyalty and trust of all she holds dear.
With herknowledge of state of the art forensics and investigative technique that have meade her America's most alluring crime writer, Patricia Cornwell once again brings life to a world both frightening and irresistibly compelling.

I enjoy suspense and the few Scarpetta novels I've read. This was a quick read, yet offered interesting characters, and a few twists. Many of the characters were well developed, but the story was a bit broad in scope. I felt it was more of a cleanup and setup: clean up older story lines, and get the reader ready for the next book. Of course, it's easy to be a critic when you're done reading. But, it was hard to put the book down. ~~Laurie

By far the worse book I read in 2004. The character of Kay Scarpetta is inconsistant with previous books. She spends most of her time being bitchy and paranoid. 3 1/2 years after reading this book it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I loved Cornwell's Scarpetta and earlier books. I always recommended them. After reading this, however, I have not managed to force myself to pick up another one. It's a shame.

I really like the meat of PC'c books, this is no exception, characters, plot and story are all enjoyable and well thought out. Unfortunately PC continually falls flat on ending the books. No exception here. She tends to lay out the perfect story and details thoughout all but the last 1/2 of the last chapter and then seems to do a oh no have to get this to my editor , how do I end it, PLOP, there is the end. Have stopped reading her entirely because of the continual disappointment in the final few pages of her books.

Thought I would be tired of Jean Baptiste Chandonne after the Last Precinct and almost didn't read this book but it is so well written with short chapters that lure you in and want you to keep reading that I read it faster than any of her other novels. Interesting character traits of all principals are developed. A must read for Scarpetta fans!

Patricia Cornwells Kay Scarpetta is a character who becomes addicting. Smart, Funny, brave, and tough she is a character who sticks with you, and you will find yourself wanting to read the whole series. Chapters are on the shorter side so the book is easier to digest.

She is one my absolute favorite authors. But this book just lacked something the rest had. The main thing that bugged me was all her previous scarpetta books she refers to her in first person like she was speaking about herself. This book she writes about her in third person. It makes it really hard to get into character and enjoy.

Run out and pick up this book! I've read everything of Patricia Cornwell's up until this book and I checked online and read some of the reviews and frankly...I was scared! I thought, 'eek' maybe I should pass on this one! That would have been such a great loss. This book was awesome! A great page turner. I'm mourning that it's over and going out today to go pick up her next one in line, TRACE. Please, don't allow other negative comments to influence your decision to read BLOW FLY...you will miss out on quite the adventure. What a great book! Another great one from the great One!!!! Enjoy!

This is the next to last book in the Kay Scarpetta series. It really does make a difference to read her series in order, mostly because of this book, "Blow Fly". I have read Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series in order. My appreciation and enjoyment of the series went from a high level to a very high level, back to a high level and then plummeted. Finally, with The Last Precinct, I thought that Cornwell's rut might be over and the series was about to climb back into my favorites. That book felt like a literary catch-up, catch breath, and prepare to move forward effort.

I was wrong. Blow Fly, the 12th in the series (13 if you count Winter Table), has the same rebuilding feel about it as did The Last Precinct. However, I was incredibly disappointed in how she handled characters that I THOUGHT were familiar to me. Lucy oh, Lucy, you are NOT the same person you were just a few books ago and while people and characters do grow and evolve, this felt more like mishandling than evolution. Even the memory of the late Benton Wesley is fully turned upon its ear with revelations as to who the character was and what his motivations / actions were. And let's not even talk about Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the medical examiner who barely gets the opportunity to examine the dead for clues as to their demise and to the person or people who led to it.

I think I might have really enjoyed this book if it were about characters I hadn't known and loved for years. In that case, there wouldn't be any inconsistency we'd just be learning about new characters and their ideosyncracies. Instead, Blow Fly felt like deep breath and regroup. Again.

The next book in the series may actually be that breath of fresh air that the last 2 have promised, but it'll be awhile before I find out for sure after the last 2 books, I'm in no hurry to read it.
Sorry Dr. Cornwell I admire you and your work / talent, but sometimes things aren't going to feel right to me, and it isn't much of an honest review if I gloss over them.

RATING: 2 stars.

In BLOW FLY, Scarpetta stands at the threshold of a new life after her work as Virginia's Chief Medical Examiner has come to a jarring end. At the close of THE LAST PRECINCT,she knew she would have to leave Richmond if she were to find any peace. She feared she was about to be fired by the Governer. More alarming, she was hounded in the media and in the courtroom ,for what some claimed was her involvement in the murder of a deputy police chief. So Scarpetta packed up her belongings and set out for the warmth and solace of the Florida Sun.

My personal comments. Very gruesome. Hard to read and not have a sick stomach. If you can handle gruesome stories then it will be fine. A truly great story.

This entry in Cornwell's long-running series cedes Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta's spotlight role to her fiery crime-busting niece, Lucy, and Marino, the opinionated Richmond detective. Kate Reading's low, comfortable voice and good impersonations are a perfect fit for Cornwell's wild plot twists and calculating psychopaths. Reading convincingly renders each of the characters, male and female, sane and insane, with an appropriate frisson of fear.

From Publishers Weekly: ""Please don't go there. The past is the past," sighs New York Assistant District Attorney Jaime Berger, who herself was introduced in Cornwell's last Kay Scarpetta novel, The Last Precinct (2000). Alas, many of Cornwell's fans are bound to agree. One fascinating nonfiction bestseller (Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper, Case Closed) later, Cornwell now returns to Scarpetta, formerly Virginia's chief medical examiner. From the start, however, the formidable author is up against the equally formidable task of getting her charismatic main character off ice and back in action. We encounter Scarpetta languishing in a crumbling little rental house in Florida. She has taken refuge there and become a private forensic consultant after she was driven from her job for her alleged involvement in the murder of a deputy police chief. The violent death of her lover, Benton Wesley, the brilliant FBI psychological profiler, has left her filled with an unappeasable grief. When the coroner in Baton Rouge asks her advice on a cold case concerning an affluent woman found dead of a drug overdose in a seedy hotel, it seems little more than a diversion. Yet it becomes clear that the overdose may be related to a fresh string of serial killings. Also disturbing Scarpetta's somber peace is a troubling letter from someone out to kill her, the sick and obsessed death-row inmate Jean-Baptiste. When Scarpetta is at last allowed to get back to business, she is a feisty, independent powerhouse whose capacity to concentrate and observe rivals Sherlock Holmes's. But too much of this book is bound up in retrospective musings about events in previous books. The great Scarpetta, her fiery crime-busting niece, Lucy, and a colorful supporting cast deserve better." Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.
