The small, unimportant town of Altgarten, Germany is bombed by over 700 heavy British bombers on the night of June 31, 1943 in this blockbuster novel about the Royal Air Force Bomber Command. It is all a mistake as the pathfinder planes mark the wrong city. The bomber stream dumps its tons of bombs as ordered but not without paying a terrible price from flak and German nightfighters both going and coming to the target area. Len Deighton does a masterful job describing the battle from both the British and the German viewpoints. In a way it shows the folly of war but there is no doubt about the courage demonstrated, on both sides, Allied and Axis. I don't give away 5 stars very easily but this book definitely deserves them.
