This is my 3rd James W. Hall novel, but not my last. He keeps the suspense going, has strong characters - you love the "good guys" and hate the "bad guys". This book has two detestable baddies, a father and son team. Shaw Chandler goes to Key West after finding his father dead. Shaw is looking for answers to several questions in his life, including who killed his father. He finds lots of answers, more than he wanted.

This is a strange book. A great mystery which keeps you guessing but over half the book involves Dougie Barnes, one of the main characters who is a total whack job. To some degree, he is retarded and spent his early years in mental institutions. He's close to thirty and just learning to read so he practices on porno novels. His speech is littered with porn-speak and is very offensive. A good portion of the book involves kinky sex and it gets very irritating and IMO unnecessary to the storyline. Just way out there for no apparent reason.

The romance between Shaw Chandler and Trula Montoya is quick. After 20 years apart, they instantly fall into bed together and fall in love. This is surprising and it's very obvious that the author doesn't do romance - kinda stilted and unreal. Though it sets up the I will do anything for you scenario used later in the book. Another book that had I actually had to read it, I would have given up on it very quickly. Listening to it is a lot easier to handle.

The characters in this book are amazing. The one character is raunchy-obscene, that could be shocking to e demure reader! But this book has quite a story to tell-had to keep reading to finish it! I will definitely read more by this author!!!

Shaw Chandler, a FDNY employee, finds himself at the dangerous center of a two decades old mystery. Set in the Florida Keys, this is a corker of a story.
