Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley is dead and a new candidate is angling for easy votes-by hanging a bad cop out to dry. Someone's picked the scapegoat, and it's rogue police officer Ray Sharkey. His penetrating Irish blue eyes have seen it all-and the ruthless code that has connected him nearly to the top may bring him down. Now Detective Sharkey's got a murder to investigate, and other worries: a woman whose grievance goes back to his days as a lusty WW II hero, a hoodlum named Frankie Blue Shoes who's working the game both ways, and even his own on-the-side business partner.

The city is naming its criminals and heroes, and laying them to rest wherre their stories all end the same...boneyards. But silver-tongued Sharkey has more on his lips than smiles, and more up his sleeve than his arm. Tough and compelling as Sharkey himself, this remarkable novel cuts to the heart as surely as a Chicago winter.
