I had a wish list book that I finally got offered but when I ordered it, and the sender said it had been sent, it went on weeks without getting it. I emailed her 3 times or more and finally she said she'd mailed it with tracking and she would let me know where it was. That was at least a week ago, and now the book has been reported lost in the mail and I did get my credit back, but I am tired of having such bad luck on this site! Why won't people respond to my emails/PMs??

I am done dealing with the ARC issue. Feel free to continue commenting though, I am sure it's entertaining.

ETA: I refunded her a credit, but I still don't think it was a fair transaction.

Third, I had found a cat picture book I really wanted, and it sat on my pending list for a long time, then it said "Will be sent by --" on it and finally, today, the day after it was supposed to be sent, it was canceled! I really wanted that book! :( I seem to get stuck with the most unresponsive, inactive members when I find a book I want! Is there any way to re-request this book?

UGH! Plus 2 of the 5 books I got in the mail today were chewed up by the PO machines! And I don't get anything back for them! One of them is almost beyond help, so it will be thrown out. I am really frustrated!

Hi Kris - You seem to be having a run of bad luck!  I am not sure why people don't respond to PMs, that's frustrating.  Just keep all these books on your wishlist and eventually, you'll get the books you want.  PBS is really a wonderful place for so many reasons.  But one of the big negatives is that patience is really required sometimes!  You may not end up getting the books you want as soon as you want them.  But my experience has always been that I'll eventually get it.

That ARC thing does seem suspicious to me just because the reciever will not inform you of where it was on the book that said it was an ARC.  I know I got told last time that not everyone has a digital camera but I am sure most people have cell phones with cameras in them so why could not this reciever take a shot and show the sender why it was an ARC so she knows for next time.

As for the others, some people just do not feel the need to PM others or are uncomfortable responding to people they do not know.  Sorry you are having such a hard time.

i think we all go through periods where it seems we get a run of unresponsive members and odd situations.  a few months ago i had a few weeks where i kept getting timed out responses left and right.  Try not to focus on these experiences though.  before you know it you will be back to having pleasant transactions.

As I SAID, Cindy, what's to prevent ANYONE from complaining about the book being an ARC when it really wasn't, and then get their free credit back??? No need to be so rude to me!

Cindy wasn't rude to you at all --

I'm wondering what you're looking for here.  Are you just venting again?  Last time you weren't quite accurate in your description of the original problem, blew up at anyone who didn't agree with you, and even those who were trying to help.  And then when all was said and done you were sorry the original requestor "had to be dragged into this."

The ARC thing has been discussed to death, but it would appear that the problem hasn't been resolved to your satisfaction?  Your concern seems to be that people are saying the books they receive are ARCs just to get a free book?

If you're just venting and not looking for solutions, you might want to mark your post "PMS" or something like that.  If you're actually wanting help, you might get farther if you didn't tell everyone who tries to help you that they are rude.

Good luck.

I am sure most people have cell phones with cameras in them . . .

No on this one, too.  ;-)

Also, I have credited her back for the book even though I don't think the matter was handled properly.

I think it is extremely unlikely anyone would give someone two credits after they have had the book for a month and likely are not returning it. I do not see how I should be giving her anything besides the refunded credit when she agreed to return the book before I credited her! I obviously know now not to do any transactions with you.

Kris, it seems that  ANY comment on your topics that doesn't gush with sympathy for you is seen by you as "rude" -- when in fact, in several topics I've read you generally end up being the rude one.  Not everyone communicates well with the written word, but you can't expect to post to a relatively public forum and get *nothing* but sympathy. Sometimes you have to expect people to present the "other side" or a different perspective on how a situation could be intrepreted.

As for the credit situation, it states right in the help center documents that if you expect someone to return a book to you for whatever reason, you need to return the credit for the book itself AND an additional credit to substitute for the postage -- unless you give them actual money instead (mail a check, paypal, etc).

You will get a lot further with people if you don't assume that *everyone* is trying to screw you! Chances are you didn't notice the book was an AR version, not that the other person is just saying that to cheat you out of a credit and a book. If the person claims this on a regular basis, their account will be investigated by the mgmt.

As for the lost book, if I was involved in a situation with a lost book, I would probably not respond to multiple requests in PM either. The book either arrives, or it is marked lost. There isn't much you can do about it either way.  In the case of the last book -- there could be MANY reasons why a book request is cancelled, and the sender isn't required to share his or her reason with you.  Sorry, but that's just the way it is. I've had book requests take almost 3 weeks to get marked "mailed" because it timed out on request from 3 or more people in a row. I don't send them PM because I figure if they aren't responding to book requests, they probably aren't going to respond to a PM either.  That said, if you get a reputation for being involved in a lot of nasty conversation on the forums, maybe they just didn't want to risk being on the receiving end of your public complaints.

I am asking how it's fair how anyone can just call thier recieved book an ARC and that's that, they get a credit back with no proof of the book being an ARC.

They cannot get their credit back unless you give it to them. If you are sure the book you sent was not an ARC, then just say, "I'm sorry, but you are mistaken, this is not an ARC. I will not be refunding your credit." That is all you have to do. The other person is in no way being unfair to you by simply asking. You have total control over whether or not she gets a refund.

If you aren't going to help me, as the other 3 people so far posted have, then please stay out of this thread

I believe you may have misunderstood how Internet message boards work. Once you post a topic it's open for public discussion. You don't get to decide who posts and who doesn't or when it ends; and it's considered extremely rude to attempt to control the discussion like this. Since you often accuse others of being rude, you might want to be extra careful not to fall into that trap yourself.

No, not everyone has a cell phone, or even cell phone with camera, but people do have access to photocopiers. Even drugstores have photocopiers these days, as well as libraries, some post offices, Staples and of course Kinkos. The book lies flat, it would be easy to make a photocopy of the cover or the title page where it would say they are ARCs.

what is the point of posting anything if you consistently go back through and erase all the posts? that drives me insane. i agree that all you seem to do is come here and complain. if you're having as bad of luck as you say you are, i think you need to speak to r&r because i find it a little absurd. perhaps they'll have ideas. we've all got great ideas, but if one thing gets said that you don't agree with, you toss out our ideas, blow up at us, then erase your post an hour later.

sigh. *passes out some chill pills*

<<Why won't people respond to my emails/PMs??>>

Given the nature of your responses to kind offers of help, surely this is a rhetorical question?

<<even though I don't think the matter was handled properly>>

AKA "I feel the rules should not apply to me because I am young/disabled/impoverished/unhappy/new/etc" even after they've been explained to me ad nauseum.

<<If you aren't going to help me, then please stay out of this thread>>

Kris, I've seen folks bend over backwards to be kind and offer help to you, both here and on Swap-a-CD.  In all cases, you've demanding, thankless and rude.  You're unhappy with the hand life has dealt you; you're young, lonely, disabled and on a tight budget.  We all sympathise, but they are not problems PBS members can help with.   There are, however, community resources available, and I would be happy to help you in locating some if you drop me a polite PM.

Good luck,

Catt

Wondering how some people totally lucked out and got cell phones without cameras in them! I wanted on without the stupid camera in them and the verzion guy at the store looked like I had slapped him in the face..

I was just trying to offer alternatives to the problem for future times that I may happen. :)  Photocopying was also a good idea since that could be sent cheaply to the sender rather then the whole book.

There are 7 cell phones in my immediate family and none of them are camera phones.  It's not luck and it's not at all difficult to buy a plain phone.  I wouldn't care how the salesman looked at me!

Terri P, who is Stephanie the Phoenix?  'splain please  :-)  Someone skilled at stirring up trouble, begging for credits and expert whining?
