Is it generally considered ok to post a book that has price tags on it? (Some stores, like Ross, sell books and add their own price tags.) I couldn't find any mention of this in the help docs, other than BookCrossings stickers. What about the stickiness that's left over after one of those price stickers is pulled off. Is that considered a problem? Any quick fixes to remove it?

Yes those things are fine.  Some people have conditions against Book crossing books but you will see that when the book is ordered.

I've had luck removing the sticker residue with a q-tip and some minderal oil. You have to be very careful though. I usually just leave them on so I don't risk damaging the book.

I always leave them one.  I figure if they bug someone, the someone can take them off.

Ditto here, I leave stickers on. If the person doesn't want books with stickers on them, they will either 1) have a Requestor Condition stating "no stickers" at which point I'd decline the request or 2) they won't have a Requestor Condition, but they will remove it themselves when they get the book.

I remove the ones from my local BS as soon as I get the book.  They are easy to remove and don't leave a mess if they are still new.  I don't remove ones from other stores as I have ended up with sticky or ripped books.  Rather not risk it.  The grocery store uses some nasty glue.

Goo Gone will take off a sticker but it depends on the type of cover. When in doubt, I leave it alone rather than ruin the cover.

What if someone gives you a book as a gift, and has cut the price out of the cover?  I've  seen this done before, or they use a pen or something to mark through the price.  So it is still almost brand new once you've read it...but is it postable?

If the price was cut out of the cover, I would probably not post it.  However, if they just marked out the price with a marker, I would post that without worry.

Cover:

  • Must both be present (front and back)
    • note that a paperback missing its front cover is  usually an illegal, unsold copy
    • "cover" does not = dust jacket.  Hardcovers do not need to include their dust jackets to be swapped here.
  • Cover not water damaged (there may be no water damage to any part of the book)
  • Cover not torn or chewed/gnawed
    • some used book stores cut out a small part of the cover; if the amount missing is less than 1 inch, this is OKAY
    • a small rip (less than 1 inch) in the cover is OKAY
    • yes, that does say "chewed/gnawed" above.  That means no pet-chewed (or human-chewed) books.
  • A bookplate inside the cover or on the flyleaf is OKAY

I think the underlined above would apply to the price being cut off.

Thanks, Cozi - guess those Help docs come to the rescue again!   It is just a lot more fun to talk about something here than read all those pages of rules....so dry, right?  I do get a lot of help here and really appreciate it.   It is easy to see how you got nominated to be a MOM - you know a lot, and are willing to share.   Someone we can rely on....    Thanks again.      :)     D.
