On the top of the spine of a hardcover book, it looks like it has been chewed.  I'm pretty sure it wasn't, it just got ripped sometime.  It's only about 3 quarter inch.  Is this okay to post?

From the Help Center:

Cover:
  • Must both be present (front and back)
    • note that a paperback missing its front cover is  usually an illegal, unsold copy
    • "cover" does not = dust jacket.  Hardcovers do not need to include their dust jackets to be swapped here.
  • Cover not torn or chewed/gnawed
    • some used book stores cut out a small part of the cover; if the amount missing is less than 1 inch, this is OKAY
    • a small rip (less than 1 inch) in the cover is OKAY
  • A bookplate inside the cover or on the flyleaf is OKAY

If it actually looks chewed, then no, it is not postable, but if it is just torn, then I think it would be okay.  This seems like one of the grey areas in the guidelines to me.

good question. I have a book that has a little cut piece out of the corner. Overall though, the book is great. Is their anyway to contact the person who wants it to see if that is ok?

A piece cut out of the corner is okay as long as it is a small piece (less than 1 inch) - some used bookstores do this so that they won't keep getting the same books back over and over

Thank you! It is about an inch. Thought it was odd, glad to know.

I read the Help Center information, but it didn't help much.  It looks chewed, but I'm pretty sure it isn't.  Do you think I should just post it and PM the requestor?

I got some older books recently, and I know what you are talking about. Where the top/bottom 1/8"-1/4" of the spine  did not have board in it, and over time became soft and worn and then worn off.

I decided that surely the receiver would complain, because it does say " or chewed/gnawed" I figure someone would say it meant chewed/gnawed from shelf wear too, so I did not post them.
