I've been wondering why sometimes when you click on a image of a book that is on someone's bookshelf, when you are taken to the more detailed page, the image doesn't show?

Here's an example:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/Presumed-Guilty-James-Scott-Bell/book/0310253314/

The link is to the more detailed page (and the image is not available), but again, the book image will show up on a person's bookshelf.

So....anyone know why this happens? I find it frustrating because when I go to the more detailed page, I want to see a closer up image or sometimes want to read a subtitle, or just ....I dunno.  I just don't like seeing a blue "no cover available" when I go to the page that is supposed to show more details.

More often than not, it is because a higher resolution image is not available for that image size.  They could use lower resolution images, but you'd be looking at a blurry book cover.

I just submitted a larger image for you, so it should show up just as soon as it's been approved.

Thanks, Lisa.   I've been reluctant to volunteer for the Book Images team (just worried that I'd be instantly overwhelmed at the work and I'd end up letting someone down, I guess), but I'd love to know how to do this.  Is joining the team the way to find out?

There are no minimum requirements. You just upload what you want, when you want. You can do it now without even bothering to join anything, though everybody'd be glad to have you. Just click "edit book data" and upload an image that's been saved to your computer.

Oh, I do a fair amount of uploading of book images (of books that I own).  I thought maybe you did something to change the resolution of the image that was already in the system, Lisa.

The book image team has always been really helpful.   I love seeing book images!

No, I find the images online, save them, and use a program to crop and maybe clean them up a little. I just can't stand seeing that big blue box.

Normally, if the original image was small, the small image should show on the bookshelf and also on the book's info page (what we see when click on the title.)  If a large image is submitted, the software will make a thumbnail sized image for the bookshelf, a regular sized image for the book's info page, and a large image for when you click on the regular sized image.

A while back there was a glitch where we'd submit a large image, but sometimes the server would only retain the thumbnail image.  The blue "no image available" icon would show on the book's info page.

The solution is to repost the image.  I've been going back though a bunch of images I posted and reposting them.  They're all showing up fine the second time through.

While we're on the topic of book images, is there some kind of crawler service from PBS that puts images to books that don't have them? Yesterday I was culling my bookshelf and checking to see if any of the books were wishlisted here. One book (which I decided to keep) didn't have a cover image, so I set it aside to photograph. I just went to upload the photo and found that now the book has a cover image in the system. Was there something triggered by my looking at the book description page yesterday, or was it just a coincidence?

Laura - it could be someone was uploading the image.  If I upload an image for a regular ISBN (not the PBS created one) then it will show the image for all copies.  Someone could have just beat you to it.

Very possible, Suzanne. It just seemed like quite a coincidence for a fairly obscure book.
