Most disheartening.

I mailed out a book near the beginning of March and now it has been marked by PBS as 'lost in the mail' because it has not arrived yet. This is the first time it has happened to me. My question is what should I do now? Should I PM the member just to be sure they didnt forget to mark it mailed? Their shelf had been on hold for at least a week after I sent the book; perhaps they went away and it has arrived but not marked? I sent it out from my college's mail room; should I doubt the reliability of a college mailroom? I doubt that because I have sent off PBS books from the mailroom with no problem and recived plenty in return. Does this mark my record on PBS in anyway?

Yes, it shows on your PBS record, but the PO looses books frequently - without alot of other negatives on your record it's not a biggie.

I've had this happen also, my book was very close to being marked "lost" because the requestor was too busy to mark it received (we made pm contact)...I had specifically watched the transaction b/c it was only a couple miles down the road, and I wondered about media mail times over very short distances. 

If you used regular media mail, there is no way to track the transaction or receive your credit unless the receiver logs the book in.  Sometimes the credit isn't even the issue.  Since this happened to me, I've used DC on my books just to avoid the frustration.  Hope the book turns up!

Erin, you might want to talk to a supervisor at your college mailroom and find out what their policies are. My college mailroom has a big media mail bin, and they only have it picked up by the "official" post office once a week...so if a book is mailed the day after they have just had a pick-up, it might not actually get sent on for another whole week.

You could certainly check with the member and send a polite PM just making sure they didn't get it. If they are inactive and haven't logged in for awhile, the system does mark the book received for them and you get your credit.

Books do occasionally go lost, but I wouldn't say it happens frequently. I've sent about 1270 books and had maybe half a dozen not show up where they were supposed to be, some that even had DC and were scanned and then just went walkabout. I've had books coming to me that went lost initially but did show up weeks and months later, even when mailed exactly when they said it was mailed. Who knows why?

Unless you have a lot of books go lost, you aren't going to be in trouble or anything.

By all means PM the requestor and ask in a friendly way if the book has perhaps arrived and been overlooked.

Books do take circuitous routes to their destinations sometimes though and it may still show up. I had one arrive 6 months after it was marked lost but that is very unusual.

The book will be on the requestor's transaction archive now instead of the active transactions list and that's where he/she will need to mark it received.

Thanks for the advice guys and for making me feel better. Its weird but I cant help but feel guilty that this requestor wont get their book. I will go ahead and send a polite PM. Also, Ill probably check in with my college mailroom, just to make sure there are no problems. Thanks again!

They got their credit back when the book went lost.  IF their account is on hold it's possible that they are out of town and just haven't picked up the book from their mail yet.

Mary > Her account was on a vacation hold for a least week while the book was on its way. Im hoping maybe she just got back and still needs to go through her mail.
