Here are the PBS/DC details on the book: Date Mailed: 1/28/2010 11:00 p.m.

Then I went to the USPS tracking site and put in the D/C #. This is what they said: The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on January 27th, 2010 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date.

This is the only info on this book available. That was supposedly mailed 11 days. It doesn't look like it was ever mailed. What do you think and what should I do, if anything? Also, this isn't the only book on my list enroute with this info.

***** UPDATE**** IT WAS INDEED MAILED AS I RECEIVED IT YESTERDAY! THE DATE ON THE ENVELOPE WAS JAN. 28TH. IT WAS ONLY SCANNED AT DELIVERY LIKE YOU ALL SAID IT VERY WELL COULD BE!!!!

This means that the book has not been scanned.  It might not have been mailed.  But they did already pay for the DC.  Which is hopeful.

The PO has been switching their policies about where and when the books get scanned.  The books are scanned less often, now often only at the sorting facility.  Sometimes not even that.

It is no indicator if the book has been mailed or not.   It is DELIVERY CONFIRMATION and they've never been required to scan it except at delivery.

Also with several states gettign hit by a blizzard this week-a lot of postal processing centers are closed.

Any scans a book gets before it's delivered are bonus scans. The only one that should be expected is the delivery one. And even that can be days before it's delivered (not all mail carriers have a scanner when they're out delivering), some never get scanned at all and some get scanned but misdelivered.

I have one marked mailed 1/13/10 that I have not received. Recently looked at the details and it shows label reprinted on 1/28/10. Will the system mark it lost if I don't receive it before the cutoff date?

That person may have just printed an extra label to have handy in case they have to file a "missing persons" report on the package with the USPS. It's easier and faster than waiting for someone to answer in PM

This could indicate the person never took the book to the post office.  I had a wish list book that, by day 19, still showed that message.  Nothing on it ever being received by the PO.  I PM'ed the sender and politely asked if they actually mailed the book and two days later it was scanned into her local post office and 5 days later it was here.  If it was day 11 and I still got that message, I would send a polite PM to the sender asking if perhaps the book ended up under the seat of their car.  I had a library book go missing like that once, so I know it can happen to the best of us.  I usually relate my tale to let them know that I understand how a book might have ended up not actually mailed.

Yes.  Unless the recipient marks a book as having been received, it will go lost after 28 days.

Cozi and Mary are correct. I would not contact the sender unless it gets very close to the cutoff date, especially if the book is coming from back east right now.

After all, if they had NOT used DC, you would really have no way of knowing if and when they mailed the book other than taking their word for it via the 'details' button. Would you contact them in that case? Or give them the benefit of the doubt and wait for the book to "time out" according to the time guidelines that PBS gives?

I'm going to wait until it gets closer to the action date of February 25th, before I pm the sender. I have noticed that when I place a book into a blue box that it does take longer to get scanned. The book is coming from Kansas and I don't know where their sorting facility is. I know all my books go to Warrendale, PA before they go anywhere else. Whenever I put a book into the blue box, it doesn't get scanned until it reaches Warrendale.

Yeah, If you want to PM I'd wait until closer to when it goes lost. As Cozi said, it's delivery confirmation and NO indicator that the book was mailed or not mailed.

I don't do PM's to the sender asking if they mailed the book - unless it's the last day or so and then it's only say something like "Looks like X book is going to go lost. Bummer."

When someone mails a book to me I'm going to presume they are an upstanding PBS member and did mail the book as they stated. To me, asking them if they mailed the book could be taken negatively no matter how the PM is presented.

I have PM'ed a couple of people when the book was looking like it might go lost.  Neither seemed to mind.  One finally mailed the book and the other wrote back and said they searched their car and the book wasn't there, so it was probably on it's way.  Many people here mail so many books, they might not remember actually mailing a particular book.  I know that I wouldn't mind a "head's up" about a book taking to long to get to someone.  I would never take offense at it.  We all have our "senior moments" and I don't want to have one when it comes to mailing books.

Glad you got the book okay, and thanks for the update. Since people in forums tend to focus on problems, it's always good to hear about a positive resolution for a change! (And really, a vast majority of transactions here do end positively.)

Glad you received it.  I'm doing my Happy Dance for you.  I wish my lost requests would show up.
