I have a highly wishlisted hard cover book. When I take the dust cover off, it looks like fingerprints on the book. Would these be onsidered as "stains"?

I would be a little hesitant to post that, but if it's highly wished for, I would put it in the Book Bazaar forum under the thread for unpostable WL books. Someone may still want it. I'm afraid if you post it like that, you're risking someone marking it RWAP. Just my 2 cents anyway. |

Amber, thx for the reply; I'll do as you suggest. That'll teach not to mark a hardcover book received before looking under the dust jacket. |

I personally wouldn't have any problems with the book as shown in the photo and would consider it postable--but I can see where you'd be a little hesitant to just send it out. On the other hand, anymore I do now look under the dustjacket and all pages before marking a book received. I'm really not very picky and will let little things go, but I have been burnt a few times with large food stains appearing through out an outwardly pristine looking book. |

I feel the same, Laura. I'd personally not have an issue with it but some people on here may find those marks to be stains. |

I wouldn't have a problem receiving a book like that :) |

I don't consider that stained. That looks like normal handling to me. Since hardcovers have paper/cloth covers, our body oils can seep into the cover while reading it. That's one of the purposes for the dust jacket. Looks like the previous owner read it without the dust jacket on it. Sounds kind of gross, but I consider it normal handling. |

Who looks under dustcovers?

I've shipped out worse looking books than that. I have yet to have someone complain. After all, this is a used book site. And I would have no problems receiving such a book. |

I consider these stains and have marked books RWAP for them in the past. |

Sherry, I have never looked under dust covers when marking hardcover books as Received. I happened to notice these 'stains' because I always take off the dust cover before reading a book (and I put a special protective sleeve over the book while reading). Thanks everyone, for your perspective on this. I would not have marked this as RWAP even if I had noticed the fingerprints when I got the book. On the other hand, I wouldn't want this to be the first "ding' on my record, if I ended up sending it to someone who is pickier than I am. Last Edited on: 5/28/13 6:12 AM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

I'm sure I'm not the only one checking out the image to see what the book title was. |

:-) The book was Six Years by Harlan Coben. |

I never looked under dust covers until someone posted a hardcover pic that looked like a rat had chew off a good portion of the corner of the book. The dust cover had been prestine and covered it up. I now look under dust covers. My opinion is always, when in doubt - post in the Book Bazaar. That way there is no surprises for the receiver and no worrying about RWAP and having to hash things out. Stress free swapping! |
