Why when on go on vacation hold do all my posted book now show the return from vacation date as the date posted? I only have a small number (36) posted but they have been there for years. Am I doing something wrong?

You did use the Vacation Hold and not the individual Hold for each book?

The individual Hold is nasty. It removes you from the FIFO list. Unlike the Wish List individual book hold or the Vacation Hold, both retain your place in line.

Honestly, I'm not sure. Just know, I put my shelf on hold because I was going on vacation. Isn't that what you are suppose to do?

If you use the menu My Account / Vacation Hold or use the Vacation Hold link on the Settings page, then it will not change the date posted for your books.

If you go to your bookshelf and select each individual book and click the Hold button, then your books are actually removed from the system. To make them available again, then you have to select each one and use the Post button to repost them. This adds them back to the system on the date when you repost them.

If you are unsure how to do something, check out the Help Center. It has comprehensive instructions on how to use the various features of PBS.

So hold does not mean hold it means delete?

This is very confusing. PBS added different types of Hold at different times. They do not work the same. Same type of name, very different.

Vacation Hold keeps your place in line.

The newer Wish List Hold also does.

The Book Shelf Hold does not. It means the book is off your shelf, but still listed. Your place in line is lost. Deleted means it is off the list.

(I always recommend the Vacation Hold if folks are going to organize and review their bookshelf. Not the bookshelf Hold. Nasty. Wish it had a warning.)

Guess a warning would be nice. No way do I see this diclosed when serching hold in the help pages. Because of dormant accounts, 48 hour holds and multiple non response rollovers, I have taken to putting my shelf on hold a week to 10 days before putting my wish list on vacation hold. Guess I will  not do that any longer. Was trying to avoid acceptances while on vacation but guess I will not bother to worry about that.

Thanks for the heads up. What's done is done.

If your wish list is on auto-request, then just use the Vacation Hold link to put your account on hold during any times that you don't want to receive new requests. You'll still receive auto-requested wish list books during a Vacation Hold.

You can use the Contact Us link in the lower right under Company to give them suggestions on how to make it clearer. They can't do that if they don't know that people aren't understanding something.

The Hold function can be used for any books, not just books already made available for swapping. Books you receive in the system can be put onto your Shelf under a Hold until you are ready to swap it. Some people will post books they haven't read yet and put them on Hold. They aren't entered into the system yet because they aren't available to be swapped yet.  The Vacation Hold is for when a member is just temporarily away and can't swap for a bit. Their books aren't removed from the system and retain their original posting date.

Melanie,

Is the same thing true if you put a requested book on hold? I really can not tell. I  only want one ot two unread books around and will put others that might arrive before I'm ready to read them on hold. Do you lose your place in line when doing this also? For me, I now understand the isue with bookshelf and while I can see it could be upsetting if a poster was looking for credits, I really do not care about obtaining more credits at this time, so not a big deal for me. I will now know for the future, if it becomes a concern of mine.

No. The Wish List Hold works differently, You retain your place in line. And if you use the "Not Now" button, that puts the book on Wish List Hold. You need to manually turn off the WL Hold, but your place is saved.

Mary, if you want to try Vacation Hold it's easy.  No one can see or order your books but you keep you place in line with Vacation Hold.

Click  "My Account"

Click "My Bookshelf"

At the top you will see how many books you have posted.

Next to that is "Click for Vacation Hold"

Then you pick the start date and end date.

Click "Place Account on Hold"

I think it's a matter of not knowing what you don't know. Mary,  I didn't know there was more than one kind of hold either.  Now I do.

I go south every year for three months and must of course put my existing shelf on hold. So do I now understand my shelf loses its place in line every 9 months? So should I just change my address, put my wish list on auto request and go on vacation hold? I have historically posted from southern home the books I buy/recieve there. If I did this I could no longer post most current books. System seems kind of messed up.

How did you do it in the previous years?

Yes. You should use Vacation Hold and Auto Request.

I'm not sure what happens to a book when you post it while on Vacation Hold. It might be active? I know that Vacation Hold has some wierd quirks, such as orders that are in process stay active, but the order does not roll over.

You might be able to turn off the Hold, post the book, then turn Vacation Hold back on?

We need to find a member that is more familiar. Someone who uses it to budget their mailing costs.

She put all her bookshelf on individual Hold. Which will lose your place in the FIFO line.

Well I put my current list on hold without ever realizing, doing that deleted their position in the to be requested position.Just never realized you lost position for putting a bookshelf on hold. Seems hold does not mean hold, it means delete. Thinking about how to do a work around for this year.

PBS has a history of using almost the same name for very different features. Such as all the Holds. And the "free swap credit". This is my vent.

I have changed my address to South Carolina for the winter and put my wishlist on auto request and go on vacation 12/23. Think that should take care of it. I will not put my bookshelf on hold this year as I guess vacatiion hold should take care of that. Since 2008 never knew. Wow!
