I can't decide if I'm just in a reading rut or am having horrible luck with my choice of books lately but almost every book I've read (or tried to read) in the past two weeks or longer has sucked. I normally read romances but enjoy the occasional suspense/horror/thriller novel to mix things up. I think the last good book I read was Stephen King's Doctor Sleep. My main issue seems to be unlikeable lead female characters. I had to DNF two romances from authors whose work I've enjoyed in the past because I couldn't stand the heroines. The latest was a mystery that I finally just skimmed through because the heroine was so unbelievably stupid and impulsive that she nearly bungled the police investigation (and had to be rescued by the hero, of course).

Has anyone else noticed a trend in unlikable heroines? Is it just my bad luck? I'm almost afraid to start another book because I'm afraid I'll end up screaming or throwing it against a wall...angry

It used to be that I had to finish every book I started but over the last year or so if it doesn't grab my attention within a few chapters or if I hate it - out it goes, WL book or not! One of the ones I couldn't finish was a WL book and I just put it on the community library shelf in my building. I'd gotten a stain on one of the pages so it wasn't postable anymore and I didn't feel like posting it in the bazaar here (money's a little tight for postage anyway).

I finish a book no matter how bad it is.  I guess I keep hoping it will get better.  I used to devour romance novels. They were all I read for about 20 years.  Couldn't get enough of them.  I have found the past couple years that my tastes have changed. I needed something different. I haven't had a WOW book since I finished the last of the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning.  Somehow the ones I have read since then have been just eh...Like you - I am not sure if I just have had back luck at book selection.  I have just started Game of Thrones.  Hoping that will have the WOW factor again.

I'm having issues with romance novels, even my favorite authors seem to have gotten bad lately. It's really frustrating.

I just read two NTM authors not in the romance genre, Open and Shut by David Rosenfelt and Blind Faith by C.J. Lyons, both great reads. Maybe one of these might break a rut? :-)

I just read Bitter Spirits by Jenn Bennett and i was really impressed. I thought it was really good.  Its probably the best para romance I've read in the past year, at least. It was witty-funny instead of snarky- funny, and the romance was very warm. (i havent read her other series yet so i wasnt sure what to expect). But i know what you mean by mediocre books all in a row.  I've read plenty of meh books recently.

The only UBS within 50 miles is going out of business, and having a whale of a sale....2 bucks a bag, I bought 4.  I have been reading books by authors I didn't even know existed.  I AM NOT necessarily finishing them all, though.  I too have noticed a disturbance in the force around some of my favorites.  Julie Garwood and Susan Elizabeth Phillips come to mind.  Only the recent stuff.
