Just curious...has anyone else ever received a book with NO postage on it?  I got one today with delivery confirmation, and an orange SCAN ME sticker but there was no stamps or meter on it!  I don't know how it got past all those people.  All I can say is that having the suggested postage rates on it seems to confuse some at the PO and they think you've already added the postage.  Just glad *I* didn't have to pay postage due!  :)

Are you sure it wasn't PBS or Paypal delivery confirmation?  Because that gets bundled in with the postage into one barcode.  If it was just the USPS delivery confirmation...how did the person purchase this without also purchasing stamps?  That doesn't make sense since you have to buy DC from an actual postal employee (I think).

What a strange situation!

It was a PBS mailing label with DC attached.  The person seems to have printed the DC on the label and then didn't attach the postage.  It has the regular "Please attach postage here" and the suggested mailing rates as all the labels do.

I agree, very strange.  I suppose the PO could have made a mistake if the person had a lot of packages that were mailed at the same time. They might have just missed one.  I know that I've mailed 20 packages at once some ti mes.  I just find it hard to believe that all along the way, with DC and them scanning it,  no one noticed that there was no postage.

MIstakes happen! This could have been picked up as outgoing mail from the sender's mailbox and the carrier didn't realize there weren't any stamps attached. Then it just traveled through the system without anyone catching it. Unless you've handed your packages to a retail clerk at the PO, things aren't really scrutinized as well as they should be sometimes. Then when it came time to deliver your package, the carrier obviously didn't sign for this as 'postage due' because no one had stamped it as such, and the carrier certainly wouldn't know how much to charge for it. It's just easier to deliver it. And that 'scan me' sticker probably was put on by the sender.

Yup! it has happened to me.  And I know that the postage didn't just fall off, it was never on the package.  The person sending me the book PM'd me with an apology because her husband blue boxed the book without realizing it didn't have any postage on it.  I figured it would arrive postage due and the sender planned to buddy back  my credit after I paid the postage.

But one week after mailing, it arrived in my mailbox with NO postage due - and no stamps or postage of any kind on it.

Go figure!

I've had it happen with a book to me.  I've read here that a lot of newbies were confused by the PBS delivery confirmation and the PO was, too.  I'm sure it's bound to happen even more now that you have the option to put on a DC without postage and DC with postage.  I've cought one of mine with just the PBS wrapper with no barcode and no stamps.  It almost went past the PO clerk because I had a lot of packages and mail to send that day.

I've received one once with no postage.  I suspected that it fell off during transit.

Well, I'll just chalk it up as luck for the sender!  :)  I figure it just slipped through the cracks.  Being an ex-Postal employee I just found it odd that it happened at all.  I have received one that was postage due once.  Some Post offices check and some don't I guess.

Thanks for all the stories!

I have had more than one postal worker look at that label and think there was postage on it already.  The appearance of the "suggested postage" box is somewhat similar to the indicia postage you get from paypal or endicia or other sites.

Only one was intelligent enough to be embarrassed when I pointed it out to her....

Yes, my PO was confused the first time I tried to mail one.  It is very confusing.  By the way I got another one without postage yesterday!

I received a book a couple of months ago with no postage attached to it----just the PBS label. I did a doubletake. I couldn't believe it had gone across the country and have no postal clerk catch the mistake.

I generally don't pay for the postage here, but I do add EDC.  If I have to take the package to the counter, more often than not the clerk thinks the postage is already on the package and I've had to insist that I need to purchase the postage.  Then they get confused when I tell them to add $.18 for the EDC fee.

Yesterday I had a very weird experience.  I was mailing a video (first-class) with the EDC printed on the label.  The clerk at the counter said she could not sell me printed postage because she wasn't allowed to scan the bar-code at the counter.  She kept telling me she couldn't scan it and I kept having to tell her, "Fine, but I still need the postage."  She ended up putting stamps on the package instead of a printed postage strip.

Then when I got home I had a book in the my mailbox.  It was lightweight and went first class.  According to the printed label, it should have had $1.98 in postage, but it arrived with just two first-class stamps.  I think the sender must have meant to put two $1 stamps on the book, but instead put the two first-class stamps.  Oddly enough, the book arrived in record time.

Jenny,

If it had the orange "scan me" sticker on it then it is very likely that it had postage on it at one time. Those stickers are applied by a person. Although it is possible (anything is?!) that person would have noticed the lack of postage and dealt with it. If they have the stickers available to them, odds are they also have available to them the stamps for "return for postage" or "postage due."

I got a book last month with no postage on it. They had paid for the DC but had neglected to put the stamps on.

I guess we can consider this our Christmas gifts from the Post Office --- such a nice way for them to say "thanks for all the extra business"!  LOL   just kidding

I am afraid that if the Powers That Be at the PO catch on, they may find it easier to cancel this option than to train their employees to learn about our system.

I just got a book returned to me this week that I had mailed out nearly 2 weeks ago....somewhere along the line the sticker with the postage on it came off. It was stamped "Returned for Postage''  I had to take it in to the PO and pay the postage again, resend, and PM the person who is waiting on it. I wondered why the DC had never been scanned.....

I suppose the sticker was maybe put on top of tape and just came off?? not sure....but at least it came back to me rather than being delivered on the other end as postage due.

Hugs! Juli
