This is from the letter I got in an envelope with the mangled 2nd page of the PBS wrapper (the 'invoice-y' part), but no book - I've exerpted the pertinent parts:

"during the processing of your package the contents became unsecured and required rewrapping in order to forward it to its destination...If the contents of your parcel (AHEM _ WHAT CONTENTS?) is not satisfactorily acconted for and you wish a search to be make for any missing articles, please furnish an accurate and detailed description of each item."  Then there was a handwritten note that said: your book was damaged beyond repair by postal machining/machinery' (the last few letters could be either ing or ery - poor cursive writing USPS employee!)

What do I do - mark it not received? mark it received with a problem damaged by USPS? but it wasn't received damaged, it was destroyed. I've searched the help docs and only find 'book I sent is damaged by usps/lost by usps' threads.

Thanks in advance!

The Help Docs say if you get an envelope without the book, you do not mark it received.  This situation is a little weird since you know what happened to the book, but no book = not received to me.

Yes, I see the problem and I don't see any clearcut answer in the help documents.  I would use the "contact us" link at the bottom of this page and send the PBS team a message about this and ask them what to do.

The help docs specify what happens if the sender gets the book back damaged or if the receiver gets the book damaged.  It says nothing about neither of you getting the book in any condition.  It's not technically lost, you know what happened to it, but you don't have it and the sender doesn't have it.

Definitely contact PBS and then please let us know what they say.

Melanie - are you thinking of the "I received an empty wrapper" instructions - because I didn't receive a wrapper, I received an envelop from the USPS - with the top 1/2 of the PBS wrapper's 2nd page...Just curious if you could send me a link to the help doc you think is appropriate. Thanks!

I did go ahead & use contact us, because I think there should be specific Help information on this topic, not just for the sender of the book...

Update - I got a nearly instantaneous response from the PBS team - how cool is that? They did direct me to the "empty wrapper" help doc in the help library. I am not to mark the book anything in the system & needed to PM the sender with the situation. Thanks all!

are you thinking of the "I received an empty wrapper" instructions - I was referring to this, because I take "empty wrapper" to mean no book inside the wrapper. The person who got a T-shirt in their wrapper didn't get an "empty wrapper" but they didn't get the book either.

Glad they got back to you quickly.

As much as this sucks, at least they had the balls to let you know the machine ate it.. Several months ago I sent a packet from work, flat nothing on it could get caught in a machine I thought.. But a month later I had the front panel with the address on it sent back to me we huge burn marks around the edges. It smells like burning paper so I really hate to think what happened to my packet..LOL I too got a note with it saying there was nothing to search for but I could get my postage refunded.. So the item is seen as being lost, lost to the machine!
