Besides Paperbackswap and Goodreads, what book review sites do you use?  Just curious as to what people are using, especially with all the controversy going on at Goodreads right now.

What controversy?

I use goodreads for reviews 99% of the time.

Anne, apparently there is a group of "trolls" who go around and flag reviews that they don't agree with, also harassing those reviewers.  There is also a bit of controversy about "hidden reviews" - something GR itself is doing but hasn't fully implemented yet or told the users about.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/969368-why-has-my-review-been-hidden

My main issue is with people not even reading a book but giving it a 1 star, in an effort to lower the books ratings.  I ran across one "reviewer" yesterday that it looked like she/he just picked out 2 or 3 authors and rated EVERY SINGLE BOOK the author had written a 1 star, with no review to back it up.  I reported the activity to Goodreads.  I just hope something is done about it soon.

I mainly use Amazon and Mobileread, and a few web sites that list new books and summaries.

My main issue is with people not even reading a book but giving it a 1 star, in an effort to lower the books ratings.

I used to go to Goodreads, but I don't like it when people use the Book Review space to attack an author or continue an argument that should be going on some place else. I've flagged a few reviews for giving one star reviews then going on a tirade about how rude the author was and how they were 'mean' in a tweeting session or some such nonsense. The whole 'review' had nothing to do with the book, and was just the reviewers podium to trash someone they were having an argument with.

(And in backtracking what started the argument, I decided the reviewer was an idiot. She hadn't been insulted at all.)

To me, all reviews should be about the individual book. It's not High School where you can get a bunch of your friends to beat up on the "meanie' by trashing their books and hopefully costing them money.

If Goodreads doesn't get this stopped, and soon, I think more people will give up on using it as a Review site.

It's funny because when I get an ARC from Net Galley, I post at Amazon and I have a personal policy not to post a negative review for a free book. Instead, I use the space to the publisher at NetGalley and tell them that I didn't enjoy the book so I won't post a review.

Nancy- please give honest reviews. ANY book can be given an honest review without it being negetive or tearing it apart. Not posting a review (good or bad) is not helping anyone. I have in the past done reviews for Thomas Nelson and asked about giving less positive reviews and they told me to post how I felt about the book, good, bad or ugly.  I could always find a few things I liked about the book to offset the things I did not like.

I use amazon, goodreads and sometimes barnes and noble.

I agree with Xengab.  If I don't like a book, I ususally try to say why.  Like the plot didn't interest me, or I didn't like a character (and why).

I consistently find the most useful reviews on Amazon are the 1-star reviews because they actually talk about the what and why they did or didn't like in the book.  So Nancy, please review even if you don't like it.

To me, all reviews should be about the individual book.

Lots of people have 'to avoid' shelves in GR, in which they shelve books they don't have the intention of reading and they were using the reviewing/comments space to say why they wouldn't read a particular book and avoid questions from others. GR has always say that reviewers can do whatever they like in the reviewing space but now they are hiding certain types of reviews.

I like GR more for the interaction with others than anything else. I rarely read reviews from people I don't know (at least if I haven't read the book) because whether you'll like a book or not depends so much on personal taste.

I write reviews for Night Owl Reviews and have found that the reviews there are usually well done (not just mine) and thoughtful.  Guilty Pleasures also writes some very good reviews.  Both sites have some great contests for their readers too.

Can you list their web addresses?  Or send them to me if you prefer.
