OK, I received an inquiry from a friend at Goodreads who picked a book off the shelf with some unusual stains. She's sure they're not foxing and wondering if it's insect cause. These are the images sent. Any ideas?

It doesn't really look like bug poo. Maybe she could hold it under a black light to see if it is mouse urine??? To me, it doesn't look like either of those things though. Do any of the other books in her collection have the same stains?

Oh joy, Valli, bug poo and mouse urine??? Where would one have to have their books shelved to get THOSE problems? frown In a warehouse, maybe!

As far as I can tell with these pictures, I agree it's not foxing. Foxing comes in shades of brown - light to dark. It usually spots, but the spots can spread to large areas.

Does she use Endust, or some other dust spray, near the books?

Thanks ladies, I'm passing this on to her and we'll see what she says.

LOL, Jeanne! Right after I wrote that, I thought, Gosh, I'm gross, but then I just shrugged and cliked the "submit reply" button anyway. lol

I saw the mouse pee and black light thing on TV. That show with the funny guy who kills bugs and traps raccoons and other neat stuff.

Oh, yeah, if the spots GLOW under the black light, it's mouse pee. ;-)

Unless she is keeping these books in a shed outside, I think Genie's dust spray is a more likely solution. I've obviously been watching too much bug-killing television. OMG, there was once a house with a huge nest of wasps living in the couch and now I'm a little afraid every time I sit on my own. I should really stop watching that show.

In my house this would be a sign of fly spit-up.  It washes off readily, except this on paper.

Valli, I've seen that show, too. I'm not sure what creeps me out more, the bugs or Billy's hairdo!
