I sent out a book on December 4. It was scanned on December 6 at a distribution center, and hasn't been scanned since. I've never seen it take quite this long before. Is there anything I can do? I'd hate to see it get lost.

I have had a ton of stuff get "stuck" in that huge processing center in Memphis.  I believe they are overwhelmed there right now.

At any rate, wouldn't hurt to give them a call.  Your postmaster can get you the number.  I did once, they sent me downstairs to the lost and found area where they have boxes of stuff that fell out of wrappers, etc.  If not there, they ship it all to atlanta, and you can file a form for them to look there.

Don't worry. I believe your book is sitting in a big bin waiting to get full of Media Mail.

I have several books mailed out on the 6th and it is still sitting at the Honolulu post office. :(

I guess Christmas mail has priority.

There is no "big bin waiting to get full of Media Mail" at any of the sort facilities.  Once Media Mail goes to the NDC network it should all be sorted and disbursed with all the various parcel post and standard mail - once in the system it is not classified or held as Media Mail to travel anymore slowly then any other parcel post package .  Now if your package has broken open due to packaging it will most likely be delayed.  And not all NDC facilities have scanners on all the various sorters to give an update of where a package may be in the system.  Unfortunately the system is currently DELIVERY CONFIRMATION and not tracking and tracing every step of the way and yet we are anxious as we can typically see various scans along the route from some of the more automated sorters - but not always.

And trust me as I worked in a postal facility last week trying to get Priority mail sorted and on its way for hours and hours on end   - post offices have been swamped with Priority mail and that would be the priority to get delivered - your package may be at a delivery unit that is trying to dig out and get all the priority packages delivered in time for X-Mas.

I mailed a book to someone (outside of PBS) on December 10th, it was scanned once on the 13th and that was the last we heard about it.  So it sounds like a lot of media mail will finally be getting delivered this week!

I agree Diane, Media Mail seems to have been traveling very slow in December.  Until close to Christmas (when the majority of the Christmas packages were already delivered) then BAM, I got a bunch of Media Mail all at once.

Remember that lack of scans does not equal lack of movement. If a book is "stuck" in a sorting center you will often see repeated scans there not an absence of them. It may be that your book has moved on, but is travelling a route where it is not getting additional scans on it.

Media Mail to and from HI would show a lack of scans while on the boat so those books should show a big pause between HI and the mainland.

Media Mail from FL seems to be in that same "hole" your books found in DEC.  Books I mailed on 3 and 9 JAN still haven't made it to their locations, but 2 I mailed on 18th have already been rec'd!
