Time to enroll for the 2008 - 2009 school year. Enrollment deadline is June 13, 2008.

I'll bump this once a month or so till the deadline.

Oh, thanks for the reminder.  I got my postcard in the mail Friday and I think  I tossed it out with the junk mail.  I was so bummed there weren't any books in the mailbox. LOL!!  Measly postcard apparently didn't rate very well with me that day.

My girls have so much fun with it. I don't eat Pizza Hut pizza, but it's free dinner for the kids once a month, and it really does make them strive to read more.

I love that they open their program up to homeschoolers.

Michelle,

Would you mind sharing a little bit more about how this program works?  I didn't see any where on their site a section for homeschoolers.

Thanks

Sure.

You sign up by submitting your name, address, email address, and phone number, and declare the number of children who will be participating in the program.

You set a reading goal for your children:

  • We will read for 15 minutes, 4 times per week
  • We will read for 30 minutes every night
  • We will read one book 5 nights per week

Whatever: You set the goal for your children. Pizza Hut never knows the goal.

You keep track of the progress.

At the end of the month, when your children have met their goal, they are rewarded with an absolutely free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut, no strings attached.

Pizza Hut intends for the reading goals to be very doable, as to encourage reading for pleasure well into the children's lives. So, you wouldn't want to set an outlandish goal of an hour of reading two times a day every day. You also don't really want to include school books as the reading goal, although some do. The idea is to create lifelong readers.

Paulina - when you click on the registration form, you'll have an option for homeschooling.

HS'ers can *only* sign up as individuals now.  They don't allow HS groups any more. So if you're waiting on a group to sign you up - don't wait!  I set up groups for four years and ever year they've gotten stricter with us.  I believe it's because of all of the cheating going on.  I know on many of my Yahoo Groups that people were making up names on their lists so they'd get more coupons.  Pizza Hut only sends 6 coupons per child.  It's a shame that others have given HS'ers a bad name :-(

That is awful.  How desperate for pizza does one have to be?

The way I understood the rules, your child is supposed to be present to get the pizza.  So there's no delivery on these.  We always get carry out and all our book-it kids pile in the car with Daddy to go pick up the pizza. I guess it depends on each local pizza hut to enforce that and see that people aren't cheating.  I've not tried to pick up a book-it pizza w/o my child present so I don't know how big of an issue that would be or not.

Rebecca - I'm talking about the group coordinators ordering extra Book It coupons, then using them for their family - above the usual 6 each child gets.

I used to live in the city where Pizza Hut was born (and it was my first job at 15 - the year Book It started) and there were probably 50 Pizza Huts in town.  So someone could go to a different one each time to not get caught.  Now I live in a town with only 3 Pizza Huts, so yeah, it'd be a bit harder here.

I've been disappointed in the program since my kids have been participating.  When I worked at PH for several years, we made a huge deal out of each kid coming in.  They received buttons each time, stickers, etc.  Now they just treat it like a normal coupon.

My Pizza Hut will deliver IF I am ordering stuff besides the freebies. I don't eat PH pizza, so we go in.

I have to agree with JC!  that's why I quit it with my kids!  Now we just do something special instead with each one.  We have gone to a couple PH where they didn't even know what it was and ended up charging us!  I just got fed up with the program.  When my dd first did it she got a little passport type book and they made a big deal of putting the stickers in each month.  But not anymore.  Kind of a bummer for the kids!

How is it a bummer? The kids get free pizza. I think it's up to the parents to praise and encourage your children, not some sixteen year-old working for minimum wage.

The program is what you make of it.

Oh, J.C.

I see what you mean.  I was thinking a family would want Book-it coupons for mom, dad and non-book it kids.  So you're saying they just want more than one per month for their book-it kids.

I'm just laughing at myself and how anal I am.  I always circle the month on the coupons as soon as they come in so I can keep track of which months we've used but I don't assign a date til it's time to get the pizza.  It says they expire 30 days after the given date so I do the best I can to make sure we cash them all in before they expire.  But that doesn't always happen.   I envisioned the pizza hut people entering all that information on the back of the coupon into a big database and being able to tell if you were abusing the system.

Do you mean to tell me it doesn't work that way? LOL!!  Can I date two sets of book-it coupons for March?  Like I said, sometimes time will get away from us and we will have to throw away a month of coupons because we forgot to use them and I didn't think we could double-up in one month.  Isn't Big Brother Pizza Hut tracking my every move? LOL!!

I'm a geek.  LOL!!  My kids are geeks too, by the way and read mountains and mountains of books just for fun so we don't really use Book-It as incentive to get them to read.  I guess I could use it as incentive to get them to clean their room or eat their vegetables. LOL!!  Book-It is more of a prize for me.  Pizza Night...no cooking for mom. WooHoo!

Umm Rosey if you noticed what I wrote I also said that we weren't getting the free pizza!  So to me if I'm going to pay for it anyway, I'll get them something else.  And I never said it was up to the 16yo to do anything!!!  Iwas saying the program has changed ALOT since I first started it!  And to be totally honest I don't need to even use a reward incentive for as many books as they read, when they started I just thought it was a cool concept!

So sorry that you think I need someone else to praise my children! But I can do it quite well thank you!  Sorry if this sounds rude but your little comment was also quite rude I thought!  I thought we just talking about the program and what we liked or didn't like!  Sorry if I misunderstood again!

That's what I was saying, too.  That in the 23 years since Book It has been around (has it been that long since my first job at Pizza Hut???? YIKES!!), they haven't been doing the same things as they did in the beginning.  Even 5 yrs ago they had a little credit card looking thing that kids could put on their backpacks.  They rec'd  a sticker for each goal met.   Now it's just like turning in a coupon.

Of course Pizza Hut in general has changed, IMO.  Once Pepsico sold them to Yum!, it's been a bit downhill.  In the "old days" we had to make all the crust by scratch - even temping the water, adding yeast, etc.  Now they use frozen dough.  It's part of the reason that one of the co-founders of Pizza Hut, Frank Carney, switched his "allegience" to Papa John's.  I used to be a restaurant inspector in my pre-kid days, and I actually talked to him about this when I was licensing one of his stores.  (I used to live in Pizza Hut's hometown of Wichita, KS).

Here's a quick bio link:

Okay, what a rabbit trail I went off on, huh?  That happens all the time when HS'ing!  If anyone wants to make a unit study of it, I have photos of the original Pizza Hut.  ;-)

Sheesh!! I was just trying to provide information for an opportunity!
Some of you here in this forum are way too uptight and too easily offended.

Maybe I'll stick to posting my finds in CMT.
