Hi there PBS'ers, So I sent off a book to a fellow in PA, only to get a letter from the USPS in my mailbox a week later, saying that the package I tried to send was damaged in transit and all they have is the label. And sure enough, enclosed in that envelope was my PBS label with postage still attatched, but without any book! Clearly, the book and wrapping got separated in transit. I filled out the request-a-search form and sent it off to the dead letter office in Atlanta, and hopefully they will look through their large bin of homeless books, find my book, and send it on to the poor fellow in Pennsylvania. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I expect a happy ending? Thanks!

From the Help docs:

If your book became separated from the packaging en route, and is not recovered by USPS by the system action date, it will be considered lost in the mail automatically on the 26th day after the date it was marked mailed. If it was not sent with PBS Delivery Confirmation, you will not receive credit for sending it.  If it was sent with PBS-DC and was scanned, you got Quick Credit already.  If you sent it with PBS Printed postage, you have already gotten Instant credit when you marked the book mailed.

--Call 800-ASK-USPS or go to http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MLNtRcvd.aspx (the Postal Inspection Service's website) and input the information online there . This will help USPS try to recover the book.
--Contact us so that we can cancel the transaction
    * the requestor will get her credit back and she can try to get the book from someone else.
--If you receive the book back from USPS and it is not damaged, you can re-Post it to your Bookshelf.

It doesn't sound promising, but good luck.

How sad. Maybe you need to improve your wrapping.

I had a Box of Books swap arrive repackaged by the PO.  Apparently the brown paper had torn off, and they caught it and boxed it up for me, and the books still got to me, all nice too!

I saw this happen recently. all I can say  is the USPS must have been using that package for a soccer match or something.

The package that arrived was an empty (new) bubble mailer, stapled and taped at the ends and sides with a large slashed open section in the middle where the book must have fallen out, which is weird since the book would have fit snuggly inside the mailer. Was an expensive book on loan to another library that was being returned.

So even well packaged stuff still can get damaged and this is by people that mail books virtually every day.  Its the first one I have seen like that, and amazes me since I have seen the photos of books and items sent with just a piece of paper with the address and a stamp arrive just fine.

Yes I got my packaging back-but no book - filled out the form and they sent that back!  said they needed more info?

.  I am not holding my breath that the book will ever be found - it is in the Post Office Bermuda Triangle never to be recovered.

I had someone send me a book in a manila envelope and only had it sealed with the gummy stuff on the envelope.  I filled out the form but never heard anything.

I received the part of a package with my address on it and a letter saying the package was somehow damaged in the mail, and all they had was that part of the package. It was a package wtih 8 books in it. I pm'd the sender to make sure it was from her (the retun address part of the address was not on the small part of the wrapper they sent me. Fortunatly, about a week later she received the rest of the package back and was able to remail it to me.

It was not books, but another time I received just part of the packaging from a package I had sent to my sister and the contents of that package were never found (or they were stolen).
